Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant in ravines behind a garden in August 1871. It names no town, gives no use and no note on cultivation, and the country and collector are the herbarium's attributions. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3700 × 5312 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Label (ink, pre-1918 spelling): Cannabis / sativa. / 22/VIII 71. / Овраги, за садомъ / the garden's name, with its third letter underlined. The stamp of the Moscow University Herbarium runs across the label.
- Readings that differ. The garden's name was read Муштаида (as the catalogue transcribes it) and Мушчанда, and the word before it садомъ and Садовъ; a third look in drafting did not settle the name. The year was read 71 and 11 (with 71 allowed); a third look found a bar on the first figure, making it 7, and the catalogue gives 1871.
- The stamped number 7517 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label names ravines behind a garden and no town; the garden's name was read in two ways (Муштаида, Мушчанда). A Mushtaid garden exists at Tbilisi: the Mushthaidi Garden in Didube district, OpenStreetMap way 56660039, a public garden since 1858, which would fit an 1871 sheet from Georgia. The reading is uncertain, and an identification that rests on one of the two readings alone, with no other place on the label to support it, is not enough for a point; no point is taken from it and no province is entered.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The label names no collector. The collector field and the title take the herbarium's attribution, Sitovskiy, which its catalogue prints in square brackets; the article says that the attribution is the herbarium's.
Country. The label names no country; the country field follows the herbarium's filing under Georgia.
Taxon. The infobox keeps the label's Cannabis sativa, which carries no author.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue names the collector as [Sitovskiy] and gives him as the determiner; the label names no one.
- The catalogue reads the garden's name as Муштаида; the readings for this page differ on it.
