Discussion
Sources
- The Bian Que xinshu, section 睡聖散, as transcribed on Chinese Wikisource from the edition with Hu Nian'an's Qing commentary. The text gives the two flowers, the rules for gathering, the dose and the use with moxibustion; the bracketed notes (按) identify the plants and correct the month.
- The Bencao gangmu, entry 曼陀羅花 (Wikisource transcription, cao 6), gives the mixture without a name.
- Brand and Zhao (2017) date the Bian Que xinshu to 1127–1270, translate the name and call the powder the first well-documented use of cannabis in a Chinese anaesthetic formula.
Source conflicts
- The Bian Que xinshu has both flowers gathered in the eighth month; its note and the Bencao gangmu put the hemp flowers in the seventh.
- The Wikisource header dates the book to 1146. Brand and Zhao give 1127–1270; the article uses theirs.
Is it cannabis?
- The text's 火麻花 is the flower of 火麻, which the commentary identifies with 大麻; the Bencao gangmu has 火麻子花. Brand and Zhao read it as the flower of cannabis (mahua).
Title
- Pinyin of 睡聖散. Redirects: Shui sheng san (Brand and Zhao) and the Chinese characters.
Kind and plant part
- Traditional medicine. Flower. The sources do not say whether the flowers were male or female.
- Still made: not known.
