Discussion

Why Shangluo is a growing area

  • The sheet of Wang 846 at Yangling (WUK0001288) carries a locality line reading "Shang Hsien, Shensi (cult.)", dated 19/9/1933: the plant came from cultivation in Shang County. Its duplicate in Beijing (PE 00557967) reads only "Shensi: Shang Hsien".
  • Li and colleagues (2026), Table S1: landrace CZ30, collected in 2020, from "Shangnan, Shangluo, Shaanxi, China".
  • The Qianlong gazetteer of the department of Shangzhou (商州总志, compiled by Wang Rujiu, 1744), juan 8, lists 麻子 (hemp seed) among the grains and has an entry for 大麻 among the goods.

Names

  • Shang Hsien is Shang County (商县), the Republican name of the old department of Shangzhou. The county later became the county-level city of Shangzhou, and in 2001 the State Council replaced the prefecture of Shangluo and the city of Shangzhou with the prefecture-level city of Shangluo, whose Shangzhou District covers the old city's ground and whose counties include Shangnan (国函〔2001〕94号, 31 August 2001).

How the border is drawn

  • The two sources name two units of the city: Shang County, now Shangzhou District, in the middle of the city, and Shangnan County in the south-east. The line follows the whole city of Shangluo as OpenStreetMap maps it (relation 2971129): about 19,600 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The infobox point (33.65, 109.90) is the centre of the border, not a field.

Growing status

The status is Active: seed of the landrace CZ30 was collected at Shangnan in 2020.

Sources

  • Wang 846 (1933). The collector is T. P. Wang on the Yangling label and T. F. Wang in the Beijing catalogue; the number and date agree.
  • Li and colleagues (2026). The achenes of twenty landraces from nine provinces were collected in 2020 and stored in the National Gene Bank of Traditional Chinese Medicine. CZ30's thousand-seed weight is 24.33 g.
