Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The slip gives the place, the date, the collector and the sex of the plant. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (IFP 03802001x0003, 1,080 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Slip (printed Herbarium Junpei Sato., completed by hand): No. 8108. / Cannabis sativa Linnaeus / Japanese Name: アサ (雌株) / Locality: 関東州 旅順 / Date: July. 9. 1936. / Collector: J. Sato.
  • Distribution label (printed 國立北平研究院植物學研究所標本室贈 / DISTRIBUTED FROM / HERBARIUM OF INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING, CHINA., typed): Cannabis sativa L. / Loc. Peiping / Coll. S.T.Wang / Field No. 234 / Det. by H.W.Kung / Date Aug. 16,1935. One reading takes the printed line's last character as 貽, in the same sense (a gift of the herbarium).
  • Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. / 大麻 / 定名人, a cursive name read once as 刘慎谔 and once as 劉淑珍, each character uncertain / a year in one or two figures, not read; the month and day blank.
  • Round stamp, read in part: a star, 中國科學院, 植物標本室, and a line read once as 林業研究所 and once as 植物研究所; stamped number 0041222. HgCl₂ at the sheet's edge. Barcode 03802001x0003.

The sheet was photographed upside down, and both readings were made from the image turned. They agree on the slip's number, date, collector and sex and on the distribution label. They differ on the slip's place, cursive: one reads 関東州 旅順, as on the slip of Sato 8107 (1936), and the other 內蒙古 and two more characters, each uncertain. A third look at the image fits 関東州 旅順.

Georeferencing

関東州 is the Kwantung Leased Territory, held by Japan until 1945 (Wikidata Q678658), and 旅順 is Lüshun, Port Arthur, today Lüshunkou District of Dalian (Wikidata Q623329). The point 38.85, 121.26 is the point of Sato 8107, gathered at the same place on the same day: Wikidata's point for the district, with which OpenStreetMap's node for it coincides. The district covers about 508 km² (Wikidata); the old harbour lies about 8 km south of the point. The slip names Lüshun and no place within it, and the present district is taken for the place of 1936. It is an area point for the district, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 13 km.

Editorial treatment

A separate gathering. The slip's number, 8108, and its female plant set this sheet apart from Sato 8107, whose slip gives the same collector, place and day, the number 8107 and a male plant (雄株). The number decides, and the sheet is a separate accession.

The Peiping label. The distribution label of S. T. Wang's no. 234 carries the typed text of the label on that gathering's sheet in Beijing Normal University (BNU 0036661). The two gatherings differ in collector, place and year, and nothing on the sheet says which plant the label was sent with. The page takes Sato's slip, which gives this plant's sex, as the sheet's own label, and does not count the sheet under Wang 234 (1935).

Collector. The collector field keeps the slip's J. Sato, as on Sato 8107, and redirects to Junpei Sato; the slip's printed heading gives the name Junpei Sato. Kitamura Siro's biography of 佐藤潤平 (Junpei Sato, 1896–1970; Acta Phytotaxonomica et Geobotanica 24: 194–198, 1970), whose printed English title spells the name as the slip does, records him at Port Arthur as a teacher from 1921 and as director of the botanical garden there from 1928 to 1938, which fits the place and the year of the slip. Tagawa's 1955 list of the Manchurian ferns Sato gave to Kyoto University (the same journal, 16: 52–55) is headed gesammelt von J. Sato and cites numbered gatherings of his from two hills at Lüshun. No source read names him as the collector of this number; the identification rests on the printed name, the place and the year.

Province. The Kwantung Leased Territory no longer exists; Lüshun lies in today's Liaoning, and the province field takes Liaoning.

Sex. The slip gives the plant as female (雌株), which the sheet bears out.

Determination. The determiner's name on the slip was not read with confidence, and the identified-by field is left empty.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the number as 8107, the number of the companion sheet in Beijing; the slip reads No. 8108.
