Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label gives the place, the date, the collector and the sex of the plant. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557875, 1,034 × 1,440 pixels).
- Label (printed Herbarium Junpei Sato., completed by hand): No. 8107 / Cannabis sativa Linnaeus / Japanese Name: アサ (雄株) / Locality: 関東州 旅順 / Date: July. 9. 1936 / Collector: J. Sato.
- Herbarium stamp of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences; stamped number 258239.
The readings agree on the number, the date, the collector and 関東州. The second place word is cursive: one reading takes it as 旅順, the strokes fitting each character, and the other as 旅順, uncertain. One reading allows 8101 for the number.
Georeferencing
関東州 is the Kwantung Leased Territory, held by Japan from 1905 to 1945 (Wikidata Q678658), and 旅順 is Lüshun, Port Arthur, today Lüshunkou District of Dalian (Wikidata Q623329). The point 38.85, 121.26 is OpenStreetMap's node for the district (node 6416739768), which coincides with the middle of its administrative area (relation 2764567, about 500 km²); the old harbour lies about 8 km to the south. The label names Lüshun and no place within it, and the present district is taken for the place of 1936. It is an area point for the district, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 13 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's J. Sato, which redirects to Junpei Sato; the label's printed heading gives the name Junpei Sato. Kitamura Siro's biography of 佐藤潤平 (Junpei Sato, 1896–1970; Acta Phytotaxonomica et Geobotanica 24: 194–198, 1970), whose printed English title spells the name as the slip does, records him at Port Arthur as a teacher from 1921 and as director of the botanical garden there from 1928 to 1938, which fits the place and the year of this sheet. Tagawa's 1955 list of the Manchurian ferns Sato gave to Kyoto University (the same journal, 16: 52–55) is headed gesammelt von J. Sato and cites numbered gatherings of his from two hills at Lüshun. No source read names him as the collector of this number; the identification rests on the printed name, the place and the year. The Harvard botanist index lists a J. Satô who collected in Manchuria, with sheets at the University of Tokyo, but gives no dates or given name, and no source read says whether that entry is the same man.
Province. The Kwantung Leased Territory no longer exists; Lüshun lies in today's Liaoning, and the province field takes Liaoning.
Sex. The label gives the plant as male (雄株), which the sheet bears out.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
The female companion. A sheet of the Institute of Applied Ecology, Shenyang (IFP 03802001x0003), carries J. Sato's printed slip numbered 8108, for a female plant (アサ, 雌株) from 関東州 旅順 on 9 July 1936, and a female plant. The collector, the place and the day are this sheet's; the number and the sex are not. The number decides, and the Shenyang sheet is a separate accession, Sato 8108 (1936).
