Inclusion
Kew's catalogue names the object Ropes of hemp and files it under the plant name 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa. Catalogues use the word hemp for other fibres too; here the plant name identifies the plant as Cannabis. Rope is an object made from cannabis, and neither wording is hedged, so the attribution is Stated. The infobox quotes the object's name.
Evidentiary scope
The entry gives Serbia as the place, an entry number and donor date of 1907 and an exhibition as donor, and no maker, no date of making and no collector. It documents hemp rope from Serbia at Kew by 1907; it does not say who made the ropes, where in Serbia, what they were used for, or where their fibre was grown. It documents no plant, population or living holding, and landrace, feral and conservation fields do not apply to an artefact.
Kew publishes no image of this object, and GBIF carries none.
Editorial treatment
The entry book number is not the date of making. Kew's help page defines an Entry Book Number as a number assigned to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition. The date made is left empty. The date acquired is 1907, from the entry book number 127.1907; the donor date, 00/00/1907, gives the year alone and agrees with it.
Country. Kew's ISO country and TDWG region fields read Yugoslavia, and its geography line reads Serbia. Kew's help page says the database was compiled in the 1980s using only the information present with each specimen. The ropes came to Kew in 1907, when Serbia was a kingdom of its own; the state later named Yugoslavia was formed in 1918. Yugoslavia is the database's later coding, and the country field gives Serbia, the state the geography line names. Kew's entry on GBIF gives the locality Serbia and no country.
Place. The geography line names Serbia only, the country the country field already gives, so the place-as-recorded field is empty.
One number, more than one rope. Kew names the object in the plural. The catalogue does not say how many ropes the number covers; the page treats them as one catalogued object, as Kew does.
The donor is an exhibition. Kew's donor field reads Earls Court, Balkan States Exhibition, given in the acquired-from field as Balkan States Exhibition, Earls Court. The catalogue does not say who showed the ropes at the exhibition. The field collector is empty, because Kew's collector fields are blank; its help page uses the donor field for specimens that passed through a second person or institution.
No culture is entered. Kew's catalogue has no culture field and names no people as makers or users.
