Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant on the lower Bortala at 3,000 feet in August 1878. β. vulgaris DC. is a variety name, not a habitat, and the label gives no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the holder's original image (3310 × 5082 pixels), fetched from its image server.

  • Label (printed, completed by hand): A. REGEL, ITER TURKESTANICUM. 1878. + VIII / Cannabis sativa L. / β. vulgaris DC. / Untere Borotala. 3000′.
  • Museum label. HERB. MUS. PARIS.; stamp Reçu le 9 Janvier 1886.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Untere Borotala names the lower course of the Bortala He (Wikidata Q11231579), which runs for more than 200 km from the mountains, above 2,800 m, to Ebinur Lake at about 200 m. The label's 3,000 feet (914 m) falls on the river's middle course by SRTM (1,057 m at 81.29° E, 838 m at 81.55° E), well upstream of the lower reach near Bole, at about 500 m. The place and the altitude disagree, and no stretch of the river can be chosen between them. The province field takes Xinjiang.

Editorial treatment

Elevation. The label's 3,000 feet is stored as 914 m.

Date. The VIII added to the printed year is read as August 1878, and the month is stored.

Title. The sheet carries no collector's number, so the title takes s.n. and the name of the river.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's A. Regel. He is Johann Albert von Regel (1845–1908), a Swiss-born Russian physician and botanist, son of Eduard August von Regel, who was posted at Kuldja and collected in Turkestan; his specimens carry the label Iter Turkestanicum (English Wikipedia; Wikidata Q354083; Harvard botanist index). No account of his route in 1878 was read. The prose links Johann Albert von Regel.

Source discrepancies

  • GBIF's elevation field, which is in metres, holds 3000; the label's 3000′ is feet (914 m).
