Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The article rests on the RSC listing for Nepalese Mountain Ganja, read live on 7 October 2026 and in 15 archived versions from April 2023 to June 2026; the Kwik Seeds listing of the same line, read live and in six archived versions from January 2025 to May 2026; an RSC blog post of April 2023; and the USDA GRIN entry for G 33749. Kwik Seeds is the shop RSC calls its other site (RSC, Hemp & Multipurpose). The listing dates the collection to the 2022 harvest and places it in Makwanpur. It names no village and no farmer. It establishes that RSC distributes seed of this population from that harvest. It does not establish the size or current status of the source population. The accounts of the late 1930s and the 18th century are RSC's and have not been checked against other sources; the article attributes them. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Georeferencing
The listing names Makwanpur and gives a latitude of about 27° N. The coordinate is the label point of Makwanpur District in OpenStreetMap (relation 4589415), rounded to two decimal places: 27.44, 85.06, the point already used for Dakshinkali (Talk:RSC-NPL-BAG-0120210001). It marks the district, not a collection site. Makwanpur District is in Bagmati Province. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Editorial treatment
- Accession ID.
RSC-NPL-BAG-0120220001takesBAGfrom Bagmati Province and usesNPL, the ISO 3166-1 code for Nepal, asRSC-NPL-BAG-0120210001does. The year is the 2022 harvest on every archived version of the listing. The month digits are01because "2022 Harvest" and "Winter 2022" give no month. - Name. The listing's title is Nepalese Mountain Ganja. The wiki's descriptive name adds "General Population 2022" as for the other RSC accessions.
- Collector.
Angus, following the other accessions RSC sourced itself. - Height. 2 to 6 m, the union of the figures the RSC listing has carried: 2 to 5 metres (April 2023 to July 2024), up to approx. 6 metres (September 2024 to April 2025) and up to approx. 4 metres (from August 2025). Kwik Seeds carried 2 to 5 metres until April 2025 and approx. 4 metres from May 2025.
- Growth pattern and leaf shape. Not entered. The listing says "Sativa type" only of one of three phenotypes, and calls another semidwarf. It gives no habit for the population.
- Viability. RSC's germination figure of about 60 to 70 per cent is entered as
Marginal, as on Dakshinkali. - Primary purpose.
Recreationwith the processing methodGanjaand the resin in the processing notes, as on Dakshinkali. - Effects. "Soaring 'speedy' high" is entered as
Soaring, speedy. - Conventions. Photoperiod
Short-dayand introgressionMinimalfollow the other RSC accessions; neither listing states them. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Conservation priority
Medium. RSC's post of April 2023 describes mountain ganja as a distinct type cultivated in alpine regions around Kathmandu and west toward Pokhara and names two RSC accessions of it, this one and Dakshinkali. The USDA holds seed of this line. No source states rarity. RSC states no conservation priority, so the rating is the wiki's, on the four values it uses for accessions. The ratings follow the wiki's accession definitions: Critical rare, from a single farmer or micro-population; High limited population, few sources; Medium moderate population, multiple sources known; Low common, broadly available within its range. Source discrepancies
Reported as the sources give them; none is resolved here.
- "Semidwarf" and height. The listing quotes an unnamed cultivator that "half of the plants are semidwarf". The same listing gives a height of up to approx. 4 metres outdoors, and earlier versions gave 2 to 5 and up to approx. 6 metres. The curator notes on G 33749 list it among the tallest accessions in the 2024 New York trials at 100 days after sowing. GRIN's phenotype table lists six plant-height means for the lot from 2024 trials (143 to 310, six sites, 4 to 12 plants each); the page prints no unit in that row, so the figures are not entered.
- Alpine or subtropical. RSC's own listing said "alpine areas of Central and Mid-West Nepal" from April 2023 to July 2024 and says "subtropical and temperate areas" from September 2024. Kwik Seeds still says "alpine areas".
- Hybridisation sentence. The Kwik Seeds listing, and the RSC listing until some time before August 2025, say "Perhaps the mountain ganja type originates from hybridization between tropical ganja domesticates and the early maturing wild-type stands of alpine Nepal". The RSC listing no longer carries it; RSC's April 2023 post makes a similar suggestion.
- Not true ganja. The RSC listing said until April 2025 that "this crop is not true ganja": the bud is often seeded, the plants mature much earlier, and the architecture is more irregular. The current listing calls the type mountain ganja without that sentence.
- Classification line. RSC listed the botanical classification "Cannabis sativa subsp. himalayensis x Cannabis sativa subsp. indica" from April 2023 to January 2025; later versions omit it. It is not used here.
- Photograph. The current listing says its photographs show plants "at 40° N in mid July and in full flower at 38° S" and does not say which photograph is which. Kwik Seeds shows one of the five (the plant beside the ladder).
- Cultivator's report and the genebank text. The USDA entry's donor narrative, dated to the donation of 22 August 2023, repeats the cultivator's "three really distinct phenos" passage. The earliest archived RSC version that carries the passage is 4 August 2025; the one of 25 April 2025 does not. The archive holds few versions and GRIN does not date later edits to a narrative, so this establishes only that the passage is on the listing in both places. The listing does not say where or in what year the cultivator grew the plants.
- Origin on the USDA entry. G 33749 gives the origin as "Collected – Nepal", with no year or place of collection.
Archived versions
The Wayback Machine holds 15 versions of the RSC listing, from 23 April 2023 to 6 June 2026, and six of the Kwik Seeds listing, from 17 January 2025 to 15 May 2026. All were read.
- Sourcing. "2022 Harvest" from April 2023 to April 2025; "(Winter 2022)" from August 2025. Kwik Seeds changed on 22 May 2025.
- Photographs. One photograph until July 2024 and a different one from September 2024 to April 2025; five photographs from 4 August 2025, with changes among them until March 2026, since when the five now on the page have stood. Kwik Seeds shows one photograph throughout.
- Other wording. The discount note and the germination test appear on the first archived version that carries "Winter 2022", 4 August 2025. The sentences on the late 1930s and the 18th century are on all 15 versions; "this crop is not true ganja" and the hybridisation sentence are on the 10 versions up to 25 April 2025 and on none after.
- The versions of April 2023 and August 2025 are cited in the article. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
Lineage
The listing's title is Nepalese Mountain Ganja on all 15 archived RSC versions (23 April 2023 to 6 June 2026) and all six archived Kwik Seeds versions, and each gives the 2022 harvest, so one lot has been on sale and the page is not split. Dakshinkali (RSC-NPL-BAG-0120210001) is a separate accession: its listing gives the winter 2021 harvest from the same district, and RSC calls the two "accessions" of one type. This listing adds "Also see our accession 'Dakshinkali'", and neither page is a reproduction of the other. Gorkha Nepali (RSC-NPL-GAN-0120240001) is a multipurpose line from Barpak, Gandaki Province. USDA genebank accession
The infobox lists G 33749 as the same lot as this accession (GRIN-Global entry), received on 22 August 2023 as one seed packet. Every archived version of the RSC listing, before and after that date, gives the 2022 harvest, and the donor's narrative is the listing's own text under the name "Nepalese Mountain Ganja". The entry's collector field names Angus, which is not used as evidence: GRIN enters him as collector on most accessions of his donations. A second USDA entry, G 34119, is named Nepali Mountain Ganja and received on 3 August 2026; its note reads "Note different than Nepalese Mountain Ganja (G 33749)". It is not listed on this page. Photographs
The infobox image and the gallery are the five photographs on the RSC listing, uploaded under fair use at reduced resolution. The listing gives them no captions, so the captions say only what each photograph shows. Kwik Seeds shows the plant beside the ladder (byte-identical to RSC's file). The two photographs on earlier versions of the listing are no longer on it and are not used. Éloise 03:40, 8 October 2026 (+07)
