Evidentiary scope

The label records a cultivated plant, 3 m tall, grown by the Meo near the col des Nuages at about 1,200 to 1,400 m. It gives no use, name or variety. A single sheet records one planting; it does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the museum's scan at full resolution (3266 × 5116 pixels).

  • Collector label (printed heading, handwritten): INSTITUT DES RECHERCHES AGRONOMIQUES DE L'INDOCHINE / DIVISION DE BOTANIQUE / Poilane No 26699 bis / Plante de 3 M cultivé par les meo / ver 12 ou 1400 m alt. / Tonkin: près col des Nuages 25 / a 30 Kil. a l'Est / de Phong Thô (partly covered by a stem) pro: de Laokhay. A printed 192 stands on the label's right edge: it is the label stock's date line (192_), left blank.
  • Tag on the stems: 26699 bis.
  • Museum label (printed, with additions): Urticaceae (pencil) / HERB. MUS. PARIS / INDOCHINE : N. du Tonkin. / M. POILANE / Reçu le 1er Juin 1938. / dupl: K (ink).
  • Barcode. Herbier Muséum Paris P06815131.

Georeferencing

The coordinate, 22.55, 103.55, is GeoNames' point for the pass Đèo Nuages. It lies 25.7 to 26.7 km east of four reference points for Phong Thổ, as the label says, and SRTM gives 1,410 m there against the label's 1,200 to 1,400 m. The point stands for the pass; the label says only near it. One gazetteer gives the pass, at a rounded coordinate. Ô Quy Hồ, the better-known high pass of the area, is about 50 km from Phong Thổ at about 1,700 m and does not fit the label. The pass lies in the commune of Sin Suối Hồ, Lai Châu Province.

The elevation field stores the lower bound of the label's range, 1,200 m.

Editorial treatment

Date. The label's date line is blank. The date, 1 December 1937, is the catalogue's; Poilane's neighbouring numbers from the col des Nuages (26678, 26696 and 26723) carry the same date in GBIF.

Province. The label's pro: de Laokhay is the colonial province. Phong Thổ and the pass are in present-day Lai Châu Province, which the province field takes.

Meo. The label's meo is quoted as written. The sentence on the name Hmong is Filbeck's and is attributed to him, as on Garrett 851 (1933).

Taxon. The label names no species, so the infobox takes the catalogue's Cannabis L.

Duplicate. The ink dupl: K records a duplicate sent to Kew. It has not been found in Kew's published catalogue and is not cited.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue leaves out the label's cultivé par les meo.
  • The label gives no date; the catalogue gives 1 December 1937.
