Sources

  • Markevych (1860), Обычаи, повѣрья, кухня и напитки малороссіянъ (Kiev: I. Davidenko), p. 159, recipe 62, "Плескана": "катать съ этимъ семенемъ лемѣшку, давая форму паляничекъ", the seed being "коноплянаго сѣмя", pounded and sifted.
  • Klynovetska (1913), Страви й напитки на Україні (Kyiv and Lviv), p. 61, recipe 366, "Плескана", cited from the 1991 facsimile reprint (Kyiv: Chas), which keeps the 1913 pages. The recipe follows Markevych's.
  • Hrinchenko, Словарь української мови, vol. 3, p. 194 (1958 reprint): "Родъ кушанья: куски гречишной лемішки, обсыпанные истолченнымъ коноплянымъ сѣменемъ и изжаренные", citing Markevych p. 159. Vol. 2, p. 355, for лемішка: "Родъ кушанья изъ муки, саламата".

Sources that differ

  • Markevych and Klynovetska roll the lemishka in the seed, shape small loaves and brown them in the oven. Hrinchenko's dictionary has pieces of lemishka covered with the seed and fried. The article gives both.

Is it cannabis?

  • All three sources name hemp seed (конопляное сѣмя, конопляне сім'я). Hemp is Cannabis sativa.
