Discussion

Identifier

The accession identifier is PHY-PHL-UNK-0120160001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.

  • Holder segment PHY stands for Phylos Bioscience, the organisation that submitted the sample and its sequence data.
  • Province segment UNK. The record's geographic location field reads only "Philippines". The word Kalinga appears in the cultivar field and in the submitter's sample name, which are labels, not location fields. Kalinga is also the name of a province in the Cordillera Administrative Region, but the record does not connect the label to the province, so no province is entered.
  • Year 2016 is the year NCBI published the sample record (24 October 2016). The record gives no collection or sampling date. As with other accessions whose year comes from first attestation, the year is a lower bound, not a collection date.
  • Month 01 is the placeholder used when the year comes from first attestation.

Typing

  • Collection method: Tissue sample. The accession documents plant material that was sequenced: the reads are from genomic DNA, which was extracted from tissue. The record's own tissue field reads "not collected", so the kind of tissue is not known.
  • Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. The record names no source for the sample, no collector and no grower.
  • Classification: Other. A cultivar label and a country do not establish whether the source population was a landrace, a feral population, an inbred line or a hybrid.
  • Accession type is left empty. Nothing in the record says whether the plant came from a general population, a selection or a reproduction.
  • Holder. The seed storage location field names Phylos Bioscience because it is the submitter and the organisation the record belongs to. No seed lot or living material held by Phylos or anyone else has been traced to this sample, so the field records the holder of the sample and its data, not a seed store.

Sources

  • The NCBI BioSample record SAMN05938241 (XML read 3 October 2026 and again 8 October 2026; identical content). Attributes: isolate 520, cultivar Kalinga_Philippines, ecotype not collected, age not collected, development stage not collected, geographic location Philippines, tissue not collected. Owner: Phylos Bioscience.
  • The SRA experiment SRX2267239 (read 8 October 2026): library strategy AMPLICON, source GENOMIC, selection PCR, platform Illumina NextSeq 500, run SRR4448747, submitted by Phylos Bioscience's data science group at a Portland, Oregon address.
  • The BioProject PRJNA347566 summary (read 8 October 2026): title "Cannabis sativa Raw sequence reads", registered 10 October 2016, submitter Phylos Bioscience, 845 linked BioSamples.
  • The figure of 845 samples is independently stated in Aardema and DeSalle (2021), who downloaded reads from the same BioProject. Their study does not identify this sample among those they analysed.

Searches of NCBI BioSample for other Philippine place words (Filipino, Luzon, Mindanao, Manila, Cebu, Benguet, Baguio, Kibungan, Lagkitan and others) returned nothing on 3 October 2026. This is the only Cannabis BioSample labelled as from the Philippines found.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The record gives a country only.

Conservation priority

Not rated. The record says nothing about the source population.

Open

  • Whether the material behind the sample came from a seed lot that is also documented elsewhere (for example a vendor line with a Kalinga name) is not settled by the record. A name match is not evidence of the same lot.
  • Phylos Bioscience's own variety pages may carry an oral history or a genotype report for this sample. They were not readable when this page was written.
