Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label gives the locality as Maesa Mai village, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province and the date as 7 August 1996. It gives the local name Kancha and the note Shrub 2–4 m high. Flower white. Cultivated for narcotic use. Seed of drug-type cannabis from elsewhere reached Thailand in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so the date of this sheet does not exclude introduced seed. The class rests on the label: cultivation in the village of Mae Sa Mai for a stated use, under a local name. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. It does not say from what seed the crop was grown, and it records no local variety. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The label names Maesa Mai village in Mae Rim District. OpenStreetMap maps Mae Sa Mai as a village in Mae Rim District (node/1189423403). The infobox georeferences it at 18.87, 98.85. It stands at 998 m on SRTM; the label gives no altitude to check it against. It is a locality point, not a reconstructed collection point. It places the gathering to within about 2 km.

Editorial treatment

The date 7/8/1996 is read as day, month and year, as the Forest Herbarium's catalogue reads it.

The collector field follows the printed label, W. Nanakorn. The locality field uses the usual spelling, Mae Sa Mai; the label writes Maesa Mai.

The infobox image is the Forest Herbarium's own scan of SN 262497, which the herbarium publishes with all rights reserved. It is used under fair use, with the rationale on its file page.

Source discrepancies

  • The printed label gives the collector as W. Nanakorn; the tag reads Nanakron and the catalogue Nanakhon. The collector field follows the printed label.
