Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 6164 (Inventory No. 10 (1905), p. 64) and the entry for PI 6164 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the origin as Calcutta and the channel as David Prain, superintendent of the botanical garden at Sibpur. Neither source says where in Bengal the seed was grown, by whom, or whether it came from a crop, a garden plot or a market. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-IND-WEB-0019010001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 6164.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • IND is the ISO code for India.
  • WEB stands for West Bengal.
  • Month 00: the date the seed was gathered is not known.
  • Year 1901 is the year the department received the lot.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

Neither source places the seed in a crop, a wild stand or a garden: the inventory names a city and the official the seed passed through. The accession is therefore classified Unknown.

Collectors and donors

GRIN-Global lists Prain, D., Royal Botanic Gardens - Calcutta in its collector field. The printed inventory says the seed was "received through" him and does not say that he gathered it. GRIN-Global uses the same field for donors on other entries of this period, so the page names Prain as the person through whom the seed came, and the infobox gives no collector.

Name

The inventory printed the name Cannabis indica. GRIN-Global now gives the lot as Cannabis sativa subsp. indica (Lam.) E.Small & Cronquist, and the infobox uses that name.

Location and georeferencing

The inventory names Calcutta and nothing finer. The coordinate is the point OpenStreetMap gives for the city of Kolkata (relation 9381363), 22.57, 88.36, a locality georeference for the city the source names, not a collection point. The city's municipal area is about 206 km², a circle of about 8 km radius, and 1 km is added for the two-decimal form. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.

Dates

The date the seed was gathered is not known, so the collection date is empty. The inventory gives April 1901 as the month of receipt and GRIN-Global gives 1 April 1901; that day is the lot's received date. The identifier therefore carries month 00 and the year of receipt.
