Page scope
Mylopotamos treats the municipalities of Mylopotamos and Anogeia, on the northern slopes of Psiloritis in the Rethymno regional unit of Crete, as one cannabis growing area: the plots police have found there since 1998. Mylopotamos as an administrative unit, its villages and the Psiloritis massif are separate subjects.

Discussion
Why Mylopotamos is a growing area
- Announcements of the Rethymno police, carried by the Greek press, report cannabis plots in Mylopotamos municipality in 2017, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2025 and 2026; in Anogeia municipality, they report plots in 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2026. Most place the plots only in an area of Mylopotamos municipality (περιοχή του Δήμου Μυλοποτάμου) or in its mountain and forest land; the 2022 operation and press reports of the July 2026 find name Zoniana.
- Ta Nea (6 and 16 November 2007) places hashish growing round Zoniana in 2007 and lists earlier plots in the Mylopotamos area, from a 1998 find at Zoniana onwards.
Title
- The police reports name the municipality, so the area takes its name. Zoniana is one village and appears in only a few of the reports. Psiloritis also has slopes in the Heraklion regional unit. Of the reports read, only To Vima (2025), looking back at 2007, places plots on the mountain by name.
- The old province of Mylopotamos held Anogeia and communities that are now mostly in Mylopotamos municipality. Milopotamos is a common transliteration and redirects here.
Growing status
- The status is Active: plots are reported in every year from 2020 to 2026, the latest in October 2026. Police operations, uprooting and arrests do not change the status.
Extent and border
- The map border is approximate. It is the union of the municipalities of Mylopotamos (OpenStreetMap relation 2187335) and Anogeia (relation 2187334), fetched 19 October 2026, about 464 km²; the infobox area is rounded from it. Zoniana, Anogeia, Livadia, Perama, Bali and the summit of Psiloritis lie inside; Rethymno town and Vryses in Amari lie outside.
- Anogeia is included because its own finds (2020, 2023, 2024 and 2026) lie on the same northern slopes; the 2020 and 2026 operations covered both municipalities together.
- Amari, south-west of the border, has its own reports: a 2021 operation counted plots in Mylopotamos, Rethymno and Amari municipalities together. In October 2025 police found about 80 plants at Vryses, Amari. They are not counted in this area.
- The two Cretan seed lots sold by The Real Seed Company and held by Delicorganic are traced only to the mountains of Rethymno, with no place named below that. The coordinates on one of them fall in Agios Vasileios municipality, south-west of the border, so neither is filed here.
- The point in the infobox is near the centre of the border, not a field.
Sources
- Ta Nea (6 and 16 November 2007), in.gr (5 and 7 November 2007). Read in Greek; the English titles are translations.
- Police announcements, 2017–2026 (iefimerida.gr, Protothema, Aftodioikisi.gr, in.gr, ekriti.gr, SKAI). Each was read in full; most reproduce the police text. Where a report gives no event date, the article uses the month of publication.
Sources not used
- In a parliamentary debate reported by Ta Nea (16 November 2007), a member put the plants seized in the area (στην περιοχή) at 9,000 in 2005, 9,500 in 2006 and 600 before the 2007 election. The area is not defined, so the figures are not used.
- A 2022 report in Aftodioikisi.gr, citing Cretapost, says the growers of a 1,135-plant plot in Mylopotamos were identified 15 months after it was found. The original report and the date of the find have not been read.
- A November 2021 operation in the municipality (eight arrests, 12 plants) concerned dealing, not plots. It is not used.
- To Vima (17 November 2025) says the 2007 operations found "dozens of cannabis plantations" on Psiloritis, without dates or places; Ta Nea and in.gr are used for 2007 instead.
- Tsatsakis and colleagues (2000) analysed plants from illegal plots on Crete supplied by drug-enforcement units and classed 80% as resin type. They name no place on the island, so the study is not used here.
- Reports of the confrontations between residents and police at Zoniana (2007, 2022) are mentioned only where they concern searches for plots or hashish.
