Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Yokohama in 1862. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (1087 × 1920 pixels).
- Header slip (printed). HERB. LUGD. BAT. / № 908.186-…213.
- Label. Printed Ex herb. horti bot. Petropolitani. (a stem fragment covers the end of herb.) / printed italic Maximowicz. Iter secundum. / ink Cannabis sativa L., with a red-crayon stroke before it / printed Japonia. Yokohama. and 1862.
- The sheet carries the barcodes L.1592626 and, from an earlier numbering, L 0815784.
- The stamped number 100640 on the sheet is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
Georeferencing
The point 35.45, 139.63 is Yokohama as OpenStreetMap maps it (node 1973500311, place=city). The label names Yokohama and no place in or around it. The farthest edge of today's city (relation 2689482, 559 km²) is 20.0 km from the point; that is a generous measure for the Yokohama of 1862, which had opened as a port in 1859. Carl Johann Maximowicz spent much of 1862 in the Yokohama area (English Wikipedia, Karl Maximovich), which agrees with the label. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 21 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's C. J. Maximowicz in initials form; the prose links his biography under the botanical spelling of his name, Carl Johann Maximowicz (English Wikipedia: Karl Maximovich, 1827-1891, in Japan from 1860 to 1864).
Place. Yokohama is a city of Kanagawa Prefecture, the values of the province and municipality fields.
Numbers. The header's № 908.186-…213 is a Leiden register range shared with Siebold s.n. (by 1866); the sheet carries no collector's number.
Source discrepancies
- None. The catalogue's collector, place and year match the label.
