Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Meguro on 19 October 1922 and names Makino as the collector. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (5755 × 8025 pixels).
- Label (printed, typed entries). 41857 / Makino Herbarium / From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino / (1862—1957), the pioneer botanist of Japan. / Cannabis sativa L. / Meguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo Pref. / Date: Oct. 19, 1922 / Coll.:Tomitarô MAKINO / Det.:G. with Murata typed over a bracketed year.
- DNA slip (printed). Population dynamics in Cannabaceae / Leaf tissue removed for DNA / Christopher J. Grassa (ECON) - 2018/07/03 / HARVARD UNIVERSITY HERBARIA.
- Second label (printed). HERBARIUM HORTI BOTANICI BRUXELLENSIS / (BELGIUM); in blue ink Acc. 1967.
- Readings that differ. The year under Murata was read 1953 or 1965 once and 1965 (probable, with 1963 or 1969 possible) once: the page gives no year. The accession note was read Acc. 1967 twice, with 1947 allowed once.
- This label prints the pioneer botanist of Japan; the other Makino labels of this group print one of the pioneer botanists of Japan.
Georeferencing
The point 35.63, 139.69 is the middle of Meguro ward in OpenStreetMap (relation 1758936, 14.85 km²), checked to fall inside it. In 1922 Meguro was a village; with the town of Hibusuma it became the ward in 1932, so the village lies within the ward's area. It is an area point for the ward, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label's 41857 is a number of the Makino Herbarium, not a collector's number, so the title takes the s.n. form, as for Makino s.n., Jinzhou (1941).
Collector. The label prints Coll.: Tomitarô MAKINO; the collector field takes the name as the wiki spells it, Tomitarō Makino, and the prose links his biography.
Determiner. G. Murata is probably Gen Murata (1927-2020), the only G. Murata in the Harvard index of botanists; the field keeps the label's form.
Place. The province and municipality fields take Tokyo and Meguro ward; the label's Meguro stays in the locality field.
DNA. No public sequence data for this sheet was found in the NCBI or ENA databases in October 2026: neither its barcode nor its number appears as a voucher, and the four Grassa samples from Meise's herbarium in NCBI come from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and São Tomé. Whether this sheet was sequenced is not known.
Source discrepancies
- None. The catalogue's collector, place and date match the label.
