Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Mama in August 1923 and names Makino as the collector. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (5755 × 8025 pixels).
- Label (printed, typed entries). 120389 / Makino Herbarium / From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino / (1862—1957), one of the pioneer botanists of Japan. / Cannabis sativa L. / Mama, Ichikawa City, Chiba Pref. (the C of Chiba dropped in the typing) / Date: Aug., 1923 / Coll.: Tomitaro MAKINO Det.:K.Hiyama(1960).
- DNA slip (printed). Population dynamics in Cannabaceae / Leaf tissue removed for DNA / Christopher J. Grassa (ECON) - 2018/07/02 / HARVARD UNIVERSITY HERBARIA.
- Second label (printed). HERB. HORTI BOT. NAT. BELG.; in blue ink Acc. '83.
- Readings that differ. The first word of the place is blurred: one reading gave Mama and the other Mama as uncertain, with Mana or Hama possible. The Meise, Carnegie and Berkeley catalogues and the BioSample all give Mama, Ichikawa City, and the page follows them. The accession note was read Acc. 83 and Acc'83.
Georeferencing
The point 35.74, 139.91 is the middle of the five neighbourhoods of Ichikawa named Mama in OpenStreetMap (Mama 1-chōme to 5-chōme, nodes 3498460046 to 3498460050), which lie within 0.6 km of one another. It places the gathering at Mama, not at a spot within it. The Berkeley BioSample gives a point, 35.7369, 139.9091, credited to a georeferencing of 2018, 0.4 km from this one. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
One gathering. The Meise, Carnegie and Berkeley sheets share the place, the month and the collector, and the Berkeley catalogue the Makino Herbarium number 120389, so they are one gathering and one accession. The page shows the Meise sheet, the only one imaged.
Title. 120389 is a number of the Makino Herbarium, not a collector's number, so the title takes the s.n. form, as for Makino s.n., Jinzhou (1941).
Collector. The label prints Coll.: Tomitaro MAKINO; the collector field takes the name as the wiki spells it, Tomitarō Makino, and the prose links his biography.
Determiner. K. Hiyama is probably Kozo Hiyama (born 1905), the only K. Hiyama in the Harvard index of botanists; the field keeps the label's form.
Place. The province and municipality fields take Chiba Prefecture and the city of Ichikawa; the locality field gives Mama.
DNA. The sequence data in the infobox comes from the Berkeley duplicate, not from the Meise sheet. No public sequence data for this sheet was found in the NCBI or ENA databases in October 2026: neither its barcode nor its number appears as a voucher, and the four Grassa samples from Meise's herbarium in NCBI come from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and São Tomé. Whether this sheet was sequenced is not known.
Source discrepancies
- The Berkeley catalogue dates its sheet from 31 July to 31 August 1923; the label and the other catalogues give August 1923.
- The Carnegie catalogue gives no number; the Berkeley catalogue gives 120389 as the collector's number, which on the label is the Makino Herbarium's.
Sources not yet read
- The labels of the Carnegie and Berkeley sheets, which are not imaged.
