Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant near Yun-nan-sen before November 1906. It gives no date, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high).
- Label (printed, completed by hand): PLANTS OF THE VICINITY OF YUN-NAN-SEN. Collected by E. E. MAIRE. Pro Vicar Apostolic of Yun-nan. Received November 1906. / Cannabis sativa Linn. / No. 1828.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. Yun-nan-sen most probably means the provincial capital, today's Kunming (Wikidata Q182852), but the form can also be read as the province itself (Yunnan sheng), and no source captured states which. The province field takes Yunnan.
Editorial treatment
Date. No collecting date is on the sheet. Received November 1906 dates its arrival, so no date is stored and the title takes (by 1906).
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's E. E. Maire. He is Édouard-Ernest Maire (1848–1932), a priest of the Missions Étrangères de Paris sent to the Yunnan vicariate in 1872, head of the Tong-tchouan district until 1890 and then pro-vicar of Yunnan (French Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index), and the prose links that form. He is not the Algerian botanist René Maire (1878–1949).
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
