Why the area is on the map

  • The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Institute of Bast Fiber Crops): Lu'an hanma (六安寒麻) among the local varieties that made up most of China's hemp crop.
  • Statistics of the Lu'an statistics bureau and city government, published by the consultancy Chyxx (智研咨询) in 2022: 1,305 hectares sown in Lu'an in 2019, 1,215 of them in Yu'an District; 118 hectares at Subu in 2021.
  • An agricultural encyclopedia entry on hemp cultivation: the Lu'an hemp district grows huǒmá and hánmá, in a rotation of hemp and grain.

Growing status

The status is Active: hemp was sown at Lu'an in 2019 and at Subu in 2021.

How the border is drawn

  • The border follows Yu'an District of Lu'an, Anhui, the district that holds Subu town, as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 3243392, read 21 October 2026). It is about 1,900 km², against about 15,500 km² for the whole of Lu'an city, which is not used.
  • The elevation and land-cover rules used for other hubs (ground above 4,000 m, and land that ESA WorldCover 2021 maps as bare, snow and ice or open water) take out less than 0.5% of the district, so the border is the district's own line.
  • Check points inside the border: Lu'an city, Subu town.

The name

The page takes the name of the city. The growing is concentrated in Yu'an District, on which the border is drawn.

Sources

  • Chyxx (2022): a consultancy digest that credits each figure to the Lu'an statistics bureau or the city government; read in full. The figures are given as the bureau's.
  • The Institute of Bast Fiber Crops' report on a national research system for bast-fibre crops: read in full. The institute posted it on 9 April 2015; its figures run to 2006, so the list of local varieties may describe an earlier crop than the posting date.
  • The agricultural encyclopedia entry: read in full on the 智汇三农 platform.

Where the sources disagree

  • Subu's hemp area. The same report says that Subu has several hundred hectares of hemp and gives 118 hectares for 2021. The article gives both, the first as the report's description.
