Page scope
The page treats kuah beulangong, the meat curry of Aceh cooked in a large pot, as a dish into which cannabis seed is reported to go. It gives one line on the dish and then the reports of the seed, each attributed. The wider practice of seasoning Acehnese food with cannabis seed is on Cannabis in Acehnese cuisine.

Sources

  • Merdeka.com, 13 April 2017 (Iqbal Fadil, "Jejak ganja di kuliner Aceh"): the description of the pot (beulangong, up to one metre across) and the statements of the paper's correspondent in Aceh, Afif, on the seed in kuah beulangong.
  • CNN Indonesia, 2 February 2020 ("Jejak Ganja dalam Kuliner Aceh"): Syardani M. Syarif's naming of kuah beulangong, kari sie itek and ie bu peudah, said at a discussion at Kamp Biawak, Aceh Besar, on 31 January 2020.
  • Musanna, Nabilah and Suip (2024), Shahih 9(2): p. 85 (goat or beef curry), p. 91 (the village cooks, the occasions, the measure, the sentence quoted). The study's interviews were in Banda Aceh, Bireuen and Aceh Besar. The page cites only its interview findings.

Is it cannabis?

  • The sources name the plant as ganja and the part as the seed (biji ganja). None gives a botanical identification, and none reports a test of the dish. The page therefore states the use only as the sources' claim.
  • Plant part: every source that names a part names the seed. The infobox gives Seed.

Infobox

  • first_recorded is 2017, the earliest cited source that records the dish with cannabis seed. It is not a date for the dish itself.
  • still_made is Yes on the strength of Musanna and colleagues (2024), who report that some cooks still add the seed.

Not used

  • Musanna and colleagues, p. 88, repeat without attribution the opening of the CNN Indonesia report of 2 February 2020 (only the seed is used; the seed keeps broth from spoiling). That passage is not a second witness and is not cited from the study.
  • The study's account of the Tajul Muluk and diabetes (p. 85) is not used here; the page is about the dish.
