Why the area is on the map
- Indian Hemp Drugs Commission (1894), Vol. I, ch. VII, para. 293: the Joint Commissioner in Ladakh (1881) named Kashgar and Yengi Hissar among the places that produced the charas of the Ladakh road, and the charas of Yengi Hissar the best of Eastern Turkestan.
- Aitchison (1874, p. 52): the very finest charas produced at Karmak, near Yangi Hissar.
- Kreutzmann (2026, p. 80): high-quality charas from Khan-Arik, between Yarkand and Kashgar.
- Hu, Zhang and Hao (2015): large plantings at Kashgar and Yengisar in the 1950s and 1960s; Yengisar and Yopurga among the main producing counties of máyān at present.
- China National Radio (27 November 2015): cannabis planted among leased maize fields at Kizilsu township and the Xikeer farm, Peyziwat County, from May 2015.
Growing status
The status is Active: Hu, Zhang and Hao (2015) name Yengisar and Yopurga among the main producing counties at present, and the police found cannabis planted in Peyziwat County in 2015. The prohibition of January 1936 at Kashgar was of the sale and export of charas; no source read says that growing in the area has ended.
How the border is drawn
- The border is a proxy, drawn on six units of Kashgar Prefecture: Kashgar City and the counties of Shufu, Shule, Yengisar, Peyziwat (Jiashi) and Yopurga (OpenStreetMap relations 2748425, 2748430, 2748431, 2748434, 2748428 and 2748435), clipped to the border of Southern Xinjiang. It is about 18,600 km², the figure in the infobox, in two parts: the second is a detached piece of Shufu County.
- Yengi Hissar, which the 1881 letter treats separately and rates highest, is taken into this area rather than given its own, as is Khan-Arik. Kreutzmann places Khan-Arik "between Yarkand and Kashgar"; the township of Hanerik (罕南力克) in Shule County is probably the same place, but no source read makes the identification, so the article gives only Kreutzmann's description. Aitchison's Karmak has not been placed on a map.
- Artux and the rest of Kizilsu Prefecture, Taxkorgan County and Maralbexi County are left in the region and out of this area: no source read names cultivation in them.
- The border is not drawn from accession or news points. Check points: Kashgar, Shufu, Shule, Yengisar, Hanerik, Peyziwat and Yopurga inside; Artux, Yarkand, Makit and Maralbexi outside.
The name
The page takes the name the sources use for the oasis. The city takes the suffix, Kashgar (city). The Chinese name of the city is Kashi (喀什).
Accessions inside the border
Pelliot 121 (1906), collected at Kashgar in October 1906, lies in the area but is not filed under it: its label gives the date, the place and the flower colour, and does not document cultivation. No news item recorded on the wiki falls inside the border.

Where the sources disagree
- The best charas. Yengi Hissar (the Joint Commissioner, 1881), Karmak near Yangi Hissar (Aitchison 1874), Khan-Arik (Kreutzmann 2026) and Yarkand (the Chopras, 1957). Each is given as its source's.
Sources not used
- Bellew, in the report of the 1873–74 embassy (Forsyth 1875), writes of bang shops in every street of Yangi Hissar and of hemp smoking at Kashgar, and Chapman's commerce chapter lists charas in a caravan leaving Kashgar. These are use and trade, not growing, and are left for an article on cannabis in the region.
- A video of the police of Shule County uprooting 123 plants carries no readable date and does not say whether the plants were planted or wild. A report of 11 plants grown at a house in Akto County (2024) is outside the border.
