Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The printed label reads In pratensibus ad fl. Irtysch frequens; nec non in deserti Soongoro-Kirghisici arenosis ad lacum Noor-Saissan. (frequent in meadows by the river Irtysh; and also in the sands of the Soongoro-Kirghiz desert at lake Noor-Saissan), and dates the gathering 1840. The label is printed for the whole issue and does not say which of the two habitats this specimen came from; both are outside cultivation. It gives no use, and the variety name on the sheet is Small's of 1975, not the collectors'. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the garden's image (2000 × 3000 pixels, through GBIF's image cache).
- Printed label. 1043. Cannabis sativa L. / In pratensibus ad fl. Irtysch frequens; nec non in deserti Soongoro-Kirghisici arenosis ad lacum Noor-Saissan. / leg. Karelin et Kiriloff a. 1840. / Soc. Imp. Nat. Cur. Mosqu.
- Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
- Stamp. TORREY HERBARIUM (boxed), beside the label; the garden's barcode 01414437.
- The image is GBIF's copy at 2000 × 3000 pixels: the garden's own server refuses scripted requests. At full size the printed type shows ordinary compression and no sign of enlargement, so the copy is a reduction of a larger original.
- Second sheet, MW0818727 (Moscow University Herbarium), read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3679 × 5182 pixels). Printed sheet heading Herbarium Horti Botanici Universitatis Mosquensis.; stamp 230040 (a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number); the same printed label, 1043. Cannabis sativa L. / In pratensibus ad fl. Irtysch frequens; nec non in deserti Soongoro-Kirghisici arenosis ad lacum Noor-Saissan. / leg. Karelin et Kiriloff a. 1840. / Soc. Imp. Nat. Cur. Mosqu.; Small's typed slip Cannabis sativa L. / subsp. sativa var. spontanea Vav. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975. A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in that herbarium, is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The printed label gives two habitats, the meadows of the Irtysh and the sands at lake Noor-Saissan, and does not say which this specimen comes from. The first names a river over 4,000 km long and no place on it. The second names lake Zaysan (OpenStreetMap relation 35913), a basin some 100 km long that the Bukhtarma reservoir has since enlarged, so even that habitat gives an area larger than a district. No province is entered.
Editorial treatment
Collectors. The label names both Karelin and Kirilov; this catalogue names G. S. Karelin only. The collector field carries both. Kirilov's initials, I. P., are the form in which other herbaria catalogue the same pair's sheets of 1840 on GBIF (as Karelin G.S. & Kiriloff I.P. and similar); the label gives his surname only. No source read for this page gives their full names, and neither is linked in prose.
Number. 1043 is the printed number of the issue, which the title and the collector number keep.
Taxon. The infobox takes the printed label's Cannabis sativa L.; Small's variety is reported in the article.
Second sheet. MW0818727 at the Moscow University Herbarium carries the same printed label with the same number, so it is shown here as a second sheet of the issue and not as an accession of its own. An exsiccata number is one issue distributed to several herbaria, and this label names two habitats without saying which a given sheet came from; the page does not claim that the two sheets come from one plant or one place. The infobox keeps the New York sheet's values.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue names G. S. Karelin alone; the printed label names Karelin and Kirilov.
- The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa var. spontanea Vavilov, Small's 1975 determination; the printed label names Cannabis sativa L.
- The Moscow catalogue gives MW0818727 no collector, date or locality, and files it under Kazakhstan; its label is the printed label of number 1043, with the collectors and the year.
