Discussion
Identifier
The accession identifier is KHA-AFG-BAL-0120180002, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Holder segment
KHAstands for Khalifa Genetics. - Province segment
BAL, year 2018 are those of the parent line, KHA-AFG-BAL-0120180001: a selection, like a reproduction, keeps the collection's date, not the year it was selected or first sold. - Sequence 0002. The parent holds 0001. No
-R1suffix is used: the suffix marks reproductions, and this page is a selection. - Descriptive name is the company's product name with the collection year.
Sourcing
Khalifa Genetics' own product page (https://khalifagenetics.com/product/afghan-lemon/), read live on 12 October 2026 and in Wayback Machine captures of 20 January 2022 (the earliest, when the page said "Available Soon") and 21 April 2024 (the latest, whose description matches the live page). The page's own data gives a publication date of 31 December 2021.
ACE Seeds' English listing of the feminised seed (https://www.aceseeds.org/en/seeds/afghan-lemon-feminized-seeds/), read live on 12 October 2026. ACE Seeds stocks the line and its listing reproduces much of Khalifa Genetics' text. Its specification table (Type and Genetics rows, flowering times, bouquet) is ACE's own and is cited to ACE.
Typing
- Accession type: Selection; selection type: Single plant. The company says the line comes from one stand-out plant it found in its Balkh line in 2019.
- Parent accession is the Balkh line, KHA-AFG-BAL-0120180001, on the company's own account ("a highly refined and stabilized phenotype of Balkh Hashplant").
- Classification: Landrace IBL. The company says that it selected the line from one plant of its Balkh line, the parent, and stabilised it over more than three years "to turn it into a true breeding strain"; ACE Seeds says that it was "selfed once and then inbred through line breeding". The parent is classified Landrace on the company's account of seed acquired from growers near Balkh. This accession is classified Landrace IBL, an inbred line selected from that landrace, by inference from the sellers' accounts. The account has not been checked against other sources. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a vendor listing does not establish the class of the source population.
- Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. The chain of custody from the source population to the seed on sale is the company's account and no other source records it.
- Pollination type is left empty. ACE says the line was "selfed once and then inbred through line breeding"; the company says only that it was stabilised. Neither value describes the whole process.
- Autochtonous: No. The seed was bred away from the source population.
- Collection date: 2018, carried from the parent; the selection was made in 2019.
- Cultivation status: Unknown. The company's page offered seed on 12 October 2026 (marked in stock). That says nothing about whether the source population is still grown.
- Traits. Flowering time and aroma are ACE's figures; the effects are the company's.
Source discrepancies
- Who stabilised the line, and for how long. The earliest capture of the company's page (20 January 2022): "Khalifa Genetics has then stabilized that unique phenotype for over 2 years". The live page: "Khalifa Genetics along with Bestgrower_420 have then stabilized that unique phenotype for over 3 years". ACE's Spanish listing keeps "más de 2 años". The article follows the live page.
- Generation. ACE's Spanish listing calls the line "Variedad pura criada por endogamia", a pure variety bred by inbreeding, without a generation number.
Photographs
The 3 photographs on this page come from the image gallery of Khalifa Genetics' own listing for the line, as it stood on 12 October 2026, and were retrieved from the Wayback Machine's copies of the same files; each file page gives the source file and the capture. The gallery holds 4 photographs; the other one is not used here. The listing carries no captions and credits no photographer. The captions here describe only what each photograph shows. The listing gives no date, place or grower for any photograph, so the pictures illustrate the line as the seller presents it and are not collection documentation. They are used under a fair-use rationale.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The line was selected and bred by the company from its Balkh line, whose point is on KHA-AFG-BAL-0120180001; a second point would plot one population twice.
Conservation priority
