Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places the plant in the Talas Alatau near the village of Dimitrievka in July 1930: Пойменный лес по долине р. (floodplain forest along the valley of the river), the river's name not clearly legible. It gives no use and no note on cultivation. The name Cannabis ruderale on the label is a determination from the specimen, not a record of where the plant grew. The plant grew in floodplain forest, outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3573 × 5234 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.
- Printed label. ГЕРБАРИЙ Всесоюзного Научно-Исследовательского Института КАУЧУКА и ГУТТАПЕРЧИ. / M. Iljin. Iter ad Asiam Mediam. / Таласский Алатау / Leg. М. М. Ильин. / Det (with a mark, no name).
- By hand (blue). Cannabis ruderale Janisch. / окр. с. Димитриевки. Пойменный / лес по долине р. [river] / 25/VII 1930 г. № 288. A pencilled 1973 on the label, upper right, is not used.
- Slips. A typed slip Cannabis sativa L. with RB 180 at the top right; pasted over its lower part, Small's slip Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975. Through the later slip the words …ated by, …est Small and Sept. 1, 1974 of the first show.
- Readings that differ. The village was read Димитриевки (with the catalogue) and Дмитриевки; the strokes cannot be counted with certainty, and either spelling names Dmitrievka. The river was read Биш-таш (with the catalogue) and Б[ии/ши]-там; a third look gave Би[ш/и]-та[ш/м]. The page does not name the river.
- The stamped number 230031 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
Georeferencing
The point 42.52, 72.24 is the town of Talas, OpenStreetMap way 87618723 (place=town), in Talas Region. The Russian Wikipedia's page on the name Dmitrievka gives it as the name of the town of Talas until 1937 (до 1937 года название города Талас), and the label's printed Таласский Алатау agrees: the range rises south of the town. The label puts the gathering in floodplain forest in a river valley in the environs of the village, not at the village; the Besh-Tash, the river the catalogue names, flows out of the range and ends inside the town, but the readings do not agree on the label's river, and the point is the town. SRTM gives 1,238 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 8 km.
Editorial treatment
Taxon. The infobox takes the label's own determination, written there Cannabis ruderale; Small's two later determinations are reported in the article.
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's M. M. Il'in, the label's М. М. Ильин (printed M. Iljin). No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked.
Place. The locality keeps the label's village name, with today's name beside it.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives E. Small and August 1975 as the determination, under the name Cannabis sativa L.; the slip itself gives Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa.
- The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa L.; the label's own determination is Cannabis ruderale Janisch. (Cannabis ruderalis).
