Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on two herbarium sheets of plants grown in a greenhouse at Bloomington, Indiana, from seed whose labels give its origin as Thailand (Sakon Nokhon) and its source as HortaPharm B.V. of Amsterdam. They show that seed said to come from Sakon Nakhon was grown to flowering and fruiting in 1996; they do not show who gathered the seed, where in Sakon Nakhon, from what kind of plant, when or how it reached HortaPharm. No surviving seed of the lot has been traced. The page therefore carries no locality, coordinates, classification or conservation priority.
Identifier
The identifier IUB-THA-SAK-0019960001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence.
IUBstands for Indiana University, Bloomington, which grew the plants and whose herbarium holds the sheets. The herbarium's Index Herbariorum acronym is IND; it is not used here because IND is also the ISO code for India.THAis the ISO code for Thailand, the recorded seed origin.SAKis the first three letters of Sakon Nakhon.- Month
00: the date the seed was gathered is unknown. - Year 1996 is the year of the sheets. The seed had reached Indiana by then; the year is not a collection date.
Lineage
The two sheets are one accession because both carry the parallel code Th-2 and come from the same season, although their source codes differ: 91-170.20 on IND-0149680 and 91-170.22 on IND-0149682. The source codes are reproduced as written and not interpreted. The single 1995 sheet under Th-2 (source code 91-170.22) is a separate accession, IUB-THA-SAK-0019950001, because it belongs to another season. Neither label gives a generation, so the sourcing type is Unknown provenance. No parent accession is set.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The plants were grown in a greenhouse at Bloomington, Indiana, so the page is a grow-out and its population's place is the seed's origin, which the labels give only as Thailand (Sakon Nokhon). That may name the province or its capital, the town of Sakon Nakhon; the province field carries the province. The herbarium's catalogue records the greenhouse as the locality and does not georeference the specimens. The map is off.
Dates
The collection date is left empty because the date the seed was gathered is unknown. The sheets' collection dates are 10/17/96 and 10/18/96, that is 17 and 18 October 1996 (the labels write dates month first), so the sample harvest date is stored as the month, 1996-10. The germination date on IND-0149680, 6/12/96, is therefore 12 June 1996; IND-0149682 gives none.
Label reading
Both sheets were read from the herbarium's photographs on 12 October 2026 (4,354 × 6,681 pixels each).
- IND-0149680 (stamp 148942): Cannabis indica Lam. / Narrow-leaflet drug biotype / Country of origin: Thailand (Sakon Nokhon) / Seed source: HortaPharm B.V., Amsterdam, Holland / Source code: 91-170.20 / Parallel code: Th-2 / Greenhouse grown. Indiana Univ., Bloomington, IN / Used for morphometric analysis in 1996, rep. 1 / 268 cm tall, weak branching, vegetative stem aroma / Germ. date: 6/12/96; Collection date: 10/17/96 / K. W. Hillig Collection number: 00125. The plant is a pistillate branch with developing fruits.
- IND-0149682 (stamp 148944): the same first six lines, with the source code 91-170.22, then Greenhouse grown. Indiana Univ., Bloomington, IN / 1996 trial, rep. 2 / Collection date: 10/18/96 / K. W. Hillig Collection number: 00127. The plant is a pistillate branch, with a separate stem segment at upper left pencilled node 3.
- The catalogue and GBIF transcribe the label of IND-0149682 as Country of originL Thailand. The sheet reads Country of origin:; the L is a transcription slip.
- The labels do not give the sex. Sakon Nokhon is the labels' spelling, quoted as written; the page uses Sakon Nakhon.
- The catalogue names no determiner. The name in the infobox is the printed labels'.
- The stamp numbers are the catalogue's secondary catalogue numbers. The occurrence ID in the infobox is the catalogue record of the first sheet, IND-0149680.
The infobox gives the maximum height as 2.68 m, the label's 268 cm tall on IND-0149680 converted to metres. IND-0149682 gives no height. The label's vegetative stem aroma names a characteristic but describes no scent, so the aroma field is left blank. The label's weak branching is quoted in the article; the branching field is left blank because its allowed values (Minimal, Moderate, Extensive, Apical dominant) are not the label's grades.
Image
Both sheets are shown, the first in the infobox and both in the article's carousel. The herbarium publishes its photographs under CC BY-NC 4.0 and the scale bar reads copyright reserved; they are shown under fair use, reduced to 1,200 pixels wide, with a rationale on each file page.
Sources not yet read
Hillig's 2004 paper in Biochemical Systematics and Ecology (read) lists no accessions: for their codes and passport data it refers to his paper "Genetic evidence for speciation in Cannabis (Cannabaceae)", Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution 52 (2005): 161–180, which has not been read. So whether Th-2 was among the six Thai accessions the 2004 paper analysed is not established. Also not read: K. W. Hillig and P. G. Mahlberg, "A chemotaxonomic analysis of cannabinoid variation in Cannabis (Cannabaceae)", American Journal of Botany 91 (2004): 966–975 and Hillig's 2005 dissertation. The morphometric work named on the label of IND-0149680 (Used for morphometric analysis in 1996) has not been traced to a publication. Nothing on this page depends on these sources.
