Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The labels give the place, the altitude, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557999, 999 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. H.2811 / Date 23/7/1931 / Locality Halach'ingkow, Tats'ingshan, Sui-yuan / Altitude 1200m. / Collector W.Y.Hsia.
  • Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Sui-yuan: Tats'ingshan, Halach'ingkow July 23, 1931 / Leg. W.Y.Hsia (2811). Det. W.Y.Hsia.
  • Tag (printed): Coll. Wei-Ying Hsia / No. 2811. The province stamp is illegible; Hg Cl2; stamped number 421619.

The two readings agree.

  • Yangling sheet (WUK0001287), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0001287, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed Flora of China form: Field No. H.2811 / Date 23/7/1931 / Locality Halach'ingkow, Tats'ingshan, Sui-yuan / Altitude 1200m. / Collector W.Y.Hsiq (as typed). Label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Cannabis sativa Linn. / Sui-yuan: Tats'ingshan, Halach'ingkow / July 23, 1931 / Leg. W.Y.Hsia (2811). Det. W.Y.Hsia. Printed tag: Coll. Wei-Ying Hsia / No. 2811. Determination slip: 中国科学院西北植物研究所植物标本室 / Cannabis sativa L. / 鉴定人 胡志新 (Hu Zhixin) 1982.4. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree on the text; one describes the top as female and fruiting, the other as male.

Georeferencing

Tats'ingshan is read as the Daqing Shan (大青山), the range north of Hohhot, which was Kweisui, the capital of Suiyuan; Halach'ingkow is read as Halaqin gou (哈拉沁沟; kow is gou, a ravine or valley), the valley of the Halaqin River, which leaves the range north of the city. Both rest on the sound of the names and on the label's Sui-yuan; no source read gives either spelling. OpenStreetMap maps the river as ways named 哈拉沁沟 (1414184628, 1414184631, 1414184629, 161746656 and 1011005027); joined, with one gap of about 0.6 km bridged, they make a line about 20 km long from the range to the mountain front. The point 40.94, 111.71 is the middle of that line. SRTM gives 1,231 m there against the label's 1,200 m; the line falls from 1,413 m at its upper end to 1,080 m at the mountain front. A separate reach of the same name, about 15 km to the south-west on the plain, is not part of the line. The point stands for the valley, not the place in it where the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.

Editorial treatment

Province. Suiyuan, the label's province, no longer exists; the Daqing Shan and Hohhot lie in today's Inner Mongolia, and the province field takes Inner Mongolia.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's W. Y. Hsia; the tag's Wei-Ying Hsia is the full form. He is Hsia Wei-ying (夏纬瑛, 1896–1987), who collected in Shansi, Chahar, Suiyuan, Hopei and Chinghai (Harvard botanist index). The prose links Hsia Wei-ying.

Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 1,200 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets share the number, the place, the altitude and the date. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue places the sheet in Xinjiang; both labels name Sui-yuan, and nothing on the sheet names Xinjiang.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium places the Yangling sheet in Heilongjiang; its form and label read Sui-yuan.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001287 also as record be212568); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
