Evidentiary scope

The form places the plant in grassland at Chudian on Mount Emei in August 1935, and notes it as rare. It gives no use. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (NAS00292883, 1,003 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290127, 980 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290128, 986 × 1,440 pixels).

  • NAS00292883, field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA / 中國植物, by hand): Locality 峨眉山 初殿 [·][·] 12 / Altitude blank / Habitat in grassland / Habit herb / Height 1.3 m. / Flower ♂ greenish / Notes rare / Collector's field No. 6478 / Date 31, Aug 1935 / Family Morac. Tag (stamped, blurred): 賀[?]賢[?]育[?]採 / 四川 1935 / 6478. Label of the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院植物研究所標本室): Cannabis sativa L., every other line blank. SZECHUAN province stamp; East China station stamp; red 089222.
  • NAS00290127 and NAS00290128: the same Chinese Academy of Sciences label with only Cannabis sativa Linn.; the same stamped tag (upside down on NAS00290128). SZECHUAN province stamps; red 089228 and 089227.

The readings agree on the form's habitat, height, notes, number and date. One reads the start of the locality as 峨眉山 初殿 with every character uncertain; neither reads the characters after 初殿. One reading did not read the name on the tags, and both find the third digit of the tags' year closed, so that it was read as 1985 or 1935.

Georeferencing

峨眉山 is Mount Emei (Omei Shan; Wikidata Q134927), and 初殿 (Chudian) a stop on the climb to its summit: Chinese Wikipedia lists 初殿 on the route above Wannian Temple, between 長老坪 and 華嚴頂, and OpenStreetMap maps a Buddhist temple named 初殿 (Chudian Temple, way 1252171171) on that route. The point 29.57, 103.36 is that temple. SRTM gives 1,742 m there; the form gives no altitude. The characters after 初殿 were not read, so the point stands for the temple and the slopes around it, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.

Editorial treatment

Three sheets, one accession. The sheets share the number and the stamped tag; only NAS00292883 carries a field form. The repository and catalogue number are NAS00292883's.

Date. The form gives 31 August 1935. The tags' year has a closed third digit and could be read as 1985, but the form's date and the shared number settle 1935.

Collector. The tag's stamp, blurred, reads 賀賢育採 in one reading and was not read in the other; the catalogue gives 贺贤育, the same name in simplified characters. The collector field takes 賀賢育 (He Xianyu; Ho Hsien-yü in the romanisation of the time), and the title takes the surname as Ho. No source on him was found, and the name is not linked.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
