Discussion
The article used
The article was read whole on 20 October 2026 in Persée's per-page text (pp. 51–71). Crossref's entry for the DOI gives vol. 24, issue 269, pp. 51–71, 1944; Persée's reference block prints "bulletin n°269-271, Janvier-février-mars 1944", and the references give the printed triple number. The scan of p. 64 was checked earlier against the text layer for the specimen numbers (the text layer reads "ait." where the scan prints "alt.").
Specimen numbers that differ from the herbarium accessions
Three numbers printed in the article differ from the numbers of Paris sheets that otherwise match its descriptions: Mission Pelliot-Vaillant no. 940 (Li-Ning-Fou; the article's Plate VII) against a sheet numbered 440; Thorel no. 3 609 (listed with Kashgar) against a sheet numbered 3009; Poilane no. 2 565 (Xieng Khouang, grown by the Hmong; the article's Fig. 1) against a sheet numbered 2365. The article does not link these numbers to any sheet until the labels have been compared. The Thorel entry is also odd in itself: Thorel collected in the Mekong valley, not at Kashgar, and the number may belong to a separate entry run into the Kashgar line.
"Mission Pelliot-Vaillant"
The article attributes the sheets nos 121 and 940 to the "Mission Pelliot-Vaillant", naming the expedition's doctor, Louis Vaillant, with Paul Pelliot. Who gathered the plants is not stated.
Names of peoples
The article uses the French names of its time: Méos (Hmong), Mans (Yao, also known in Vietnam as Dao), Nhungs (Nùng), Muongs and Pahouins (Fang). It calls Africans les Noirs and southern Africans Cafres. The article uses current names in its own voice. Whether the "Muongs" Chevalier names as hemp growers between Lào Cai and Sa Pa were Mường, or another people of the area given that name, is not settled by the article.
"Nous" in 1880
"Lorsque nous y pénétrâmes vers 1880" (p. 67) is the French arrival in the French Congo, not Chevalier's own: he was born in 1873. The article renders it as "when the French arrived about 1880".
The 1902 sheet and the account
The label of Chevalier 5043 bis (M'Poya, 5 August 1902) says the plant was "cultivé dans le village" (grown in the village). The article's account of the 1902 journey says that the few plants smokers needed were usually grown in hidden places. The account is a general statement about the riverside villages, not about this gathering, and the two are not in conflict.
Sheets with no account
Chevalier's sheet 42218 (Adrar, Algeria, 31 December 1931) is not mentioned in the article.
