Discussion

Evidentiary scope

Henry's labels on the Missouri and Edinburgh duplicates read cultd. woven into cloth worn by the aborigines (cultivated, woven into cloth worn by the aborigines), at Feng Chen Lin, at 6,000 feet, in Yunnan; the New York slip reads cultd. The word aborigines is Henry's. The labels do not name the people, and Feng Chen Lin has not been located. No label gives a year. The Edinburgh duplicate is marked Purchased 1898., so the gathering is earlier. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered before 1898. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the labels do not name the people, the village or the year.

Label reading

Read from the garden's image (2000 × 3000 pixels, through GBIF's image cache), the Missouri image (2000 × 3000) and the Edinburgh IIIF image (4096 pixels high).

  • New York, printed slip. cultd (by hand) / A. HENRY, / CHINA, No. 11209 / YUNNAN, Mengtze / Cannabis sativa L.
  • New York, field slip (pencil): a circled mark / Sept 10 / cultd / a third line read independently as T[a]-chi[?]-sha[?] and T~ cheu[?] sho[?], not stated / 11209.
  • New York, footer. NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN / HERBARIUM OF A. HENRY / PURCHASED BY MEMBERS OF THE GARDEN, 1901. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa, E. Small, Aug. 1975.
  • Missouri (MO 105656990; stamp 90705): A. HENRY / CHINA, No 11,209 / YUNNAN Feng Chen Lin, 6000' / cultd. woven into cloth / worn by the aborigines.
  • Edinburgh (E01459302): A. HENRY / CHINA, No 11,209 / YUNNAN Feng Chen Lin – cultd – 6000' – woven into cloth worn by the aborigines / Purchased 1898.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Feng Chen Lin was searched in Wikidata, Wikipedia (English and Chinese), Nominatim and GBIF under three spellings and the guessed characters 风尘林, without result. Mengzi (Wikidata Q1201056) lies at 1,321 m in SRTM, about 500 m below the label's 6,000 feet, so if the altitude is right the plants grew in the hills, not in the town. The elevation field stores the label's 6,000 feet as 1,829 m.

Henry's printed tickets name his station, Mengtze, on many of his Yunnan sheets; on this gathering the two duplicates name a different place. Both are reported and neither is preferred.

Editorial treatment

Three sheets, one accession. The three sheets share the number 11209, and the Missouri and Edinburgh labels are in one hand with the same text. The New York sheet is the infobox image (CC BY 4.0); the Edinburgh sheet is shown in the gallery (CC BY-SA 2.5). The Missouri image is published under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 and is cited, not uploaded.

Date. The field slip's Sept 10 has no year. Edinburgh bought its sheet in 1898, so the gathering is no later than September 1897, but no year is stored and the title takes (s.d.). The Harvard botanist index dates Henry's Yunnan collecting to 1896–1899.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's A. Henry; the prose links Augustine Henry (1857–1930).

Wording. Aborigines is quoted as Henry's and attributed to him.

Source discrepancies

  • The New York label names Mengtze; the Missouri and Edinburgh labels name Feng Chen Lin.
  • The Missouri catalogue reads Feng Chen Len; the label reads Feng Chen Lin.
  • Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place or country for its sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan).
