Page scope
Gurye treats Gurye County, in the Seomjin basin of south-western South Korea, as a historical cannabis growing area: the native hemp grown by most households there for their own cloth, from the 1920s until growing fell away in the 1970s. Korean hemp cloth in general is treated at Sambe, and the law on hemp in both Korean states at Korea. The county as a whole is a separate subject.

Discussion
Why Gurye is a growing area
- Choi (2014), from interviews in every township of the county in 2010 and 2012 with people born between 1914 and 1943: most households grew hemp in the 1920s and 1930s, and the variety stayed native under Japanese rule: "일제 식민지 지배 기간 동안 구례군에서 삼 품종이 재래종에서 야주마 종으로 전환되지는 않은 것으로 나타났다" (during colonial rule the hemp variety in Gurye did not change from the native variety to Yashū hemp).
- Choi (2014), Table 2: the county's hemp area, 79.9 hectares in 1967 and 33.6 hectares in 1973.
How the border is drawn
- The line follows Gurye County (OpenStreetMap relation 7680386): about 440 km², the figure in the infobox. Choi's fieldwork covered the whole county, its one eup and seven myeon, and no source places the fields more closely.
- The infobox point (35.24, 127.50) is the centre of the border, not a field.
Growing status
The status is Historical. Choi (2014) dates the growing from the 1920s, as far back as the people interviewed remembered, to the 1970s: hemp was hardly grown from the mid-1970s, and one woman recalled stopping in the late 1970s. Choi (2014), the newest source, describes no growing after the 1970s. The Grown years in the infobox are left blank: Choi gives decades, and the last year with a figure, 1973, is not the year growing ended.
Sources
- Choi (2014) presents itself as the first study of hemp cloth in Gurye; it rests on literature and on two rounds of interviews. The fifteenth-century records and the survey of about 1918 are cited from Cho (1992), Honam Culture Study 21.
- Table 2 of Choi (2014) is titled for 1968 to 1975 but lists 1967 to 1976, with dots for 1974 to 1976. Its last column is printed as kilograms; the values, between 24 and 82, are too small for a county's crop in kilograms, so the unit of that column is in doubt.
- Yashū hemp (野州麻) is the hemp of Tochigi, in Japan.
Open questions
- Whether a source states when growing ended in the county. Choi writes that traditional hemp-cloth making stopped from the mid-1970s and that the county has had no traditional textile making for more than twenty years.
