Evidentiary scope
Forrest's field note on the label reads Open, stony ground around the city of Tali. Cultivated by the Chinese., at 6,700 feet, and dates the gathering June-Aug. 1906. It describes a half-shrubby plant of 4 to 8 feet with light green flowers. It names no variety and no use; the phrase is Forrest's and is reported as his. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1906. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the note does not separate this plant or stand from the crop in general.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high).
- Label (printed, completed by hand): PLANTS OF E. TIBET AND S.W. CHINA. COLLECTED BY GEORGE FORREST. COLLECTOR FOR A. K. BULLEY of NESS, NESTON, CHESHIRE. / Datisca (superseded) / Cannabis sativa, Linn. / No. 4761. Half shrubby plant of 4-8 ft. Flowers light green. Open, stony ground around the city of Tali. Cultivated by the Chinese. Lat. 25°40'N. Alt. 6700 ft. June-Aug. 1906. W.Yunnan, China.
Georeferencing
The coordinate, 25.69, 100.16, is Wikidata's point for Dali Old Town, the walled city of Tali (Q126678744), 25.69391, 100.16108, rounded to two decimals. SRTM gives 2,029 m there, against the label's 6,700 ft (2,042 m), and the label's own latitude, 25°40′N (25.67), agrees. The point stands for the city the label names, not for a collection site around it. The province field takes Yunnan.
Editorial treatment
Elevation. The label's 6,700 ft is stored as 2,042 m.
Date. The label gives a span, June to August 1906; the year is stored.
Collector. George Forrest (1873–1932), the Scottish plant collector, made his first expedition to Yunnan in 1904 for the Liverpool horticulturist Arthur Kilpin Bulley and reached Tali that August (English Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index). The collector field takes the label's George Forrest. Bulley is named in plain text.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
