Identifier
The accession identifier is EAG-COD-NOR-0120240001, built from the holder, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, the province segment, the month, the year and the sequence number.
- Holder segment
EAGstands for East Africa Genes. - Year 2024 is the year of the first dated document that lists the line: the seller's Overgrow post of 4 September 2024, which first names Masisi as the source. No source gives a collection year, so the identifier takes the first attested year. It is a lower bound, not a collection date, and the collection date field is empty.
- Month 01 is the placeholder used when the year comes from first attestation.
- Province segment. The seller names the Masisi-Rutshuru region and Goma, all in North Kivu, so the province field is North Kivu, as on the wiki's other North Kivu accession, and the segment is
NOR. - Sequence
0001. The only North Kivu line.
Sourcing
The catalogue page Pure African Strains (https://eastafricagenes.blog/pure-african-strains/) was read as it stood on 8 October 2026 and in twelve archived captures from 7 August 2020 to 4 June 2023 (https://web.archive.org/web/*/eastafricagenes.blog/pure-african-strains/). No capture between June 2023 and the current page could be read. The line is on the current page but not in any capture. The seller's Overgrow posts of 4, 8, 9 and 13 September 2024 (https://overgrow.com/t/congo-trip-with-kidete/133431/726, posts 751, 770 and 797) and Upstate's of 1 November 2024 (https://overgrow.com/t/masisi-congo-preservation-black-african-magic/169249/1) were read from saved copies, and the blog post of 27 January 2026 from the seller's site.
The catalogue sells one line under the joint name; the trip reports and the 2026 post speak of a Masisi and a Rutshuru sativa. Which of them, or which mix, the packs contain is not stated, nor whether they are the trip seed or Upstate's reproduction of it. No collector, farmer, collection site or collection date is named.
"Black African Magic" is a name the catalogue gives the line in its image captions; whether the line is that strain was questioned on Overgrow, and the name is entered only as the seller's synonym.
Typing
- Classification: Landrace. The seller's catalogue says that communities living near the forests on the Congo–Uganda border grow the line, and the seller brought seed back from its trip to Goma in 2024; Upstate, who helped pay for the trip, wrote that the seeds were obtained on an island of refugees near Virunga National Park. That places the source of the seed with growers in the region. The packs may hold the Masisi or the Rutshuru seed, or both, and may be the trip seed or Upstate's reproduction of it; either way the source is the same region's crop. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the seller's account, which names no grower or collection site. The account has not been checked against other sources. An earlier version of this note classified the line as Other, on the ground that a seller's account does not establish the class of the source population.
- Sourcing type: Unknown provenance. No source gives a chain of custody from a growing population to the seed on sale.
- Accession type is left empty: the sources do not say whether the seed on sale was gathered from growers or reproduced from earlier seed.
- Traits. The flavours and effects in the article are the seller's words. The catalogue's "Vegetation & Flowering" figure counts vegetative growth and flowering together, so it is reported in the article and not entered as a flowering time.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The seller names a region that spans two territories, Masisi (OpenStreetMap relation 5327791, about 4,390 km²) and Rutshuru (relation 8974983, about 5,290 km²), which adjoin, and no place within them; the province, North Kivu (relation 5642698, about 58,520 km²), is too large for a point.
Source discrepancies
- Where the seed came from. Seller, after the trip: a tour guide said cannabis in Goma comes from Masisi. Upstate: the seeds came from refugees on an island near Virunga National Park.
- The border. The catalogue puts the growers near the Congo–Uganda border. In OpenStreetMap, Rutshuru Territory meets the border with Uganda; Masisi Territory does not, and lies about 39 km from it at its nearest.
Conservation priority
Not rated. The sources give nothing about the size or status of the source population.
