Discussion
Sources
- The Zhenglei bencao (Siku quanshu, juan 24) gives the recipe in full under the Tujing commentary, headed "the Qiezhong fang takes damaren jiu alone" (篋中方單服大麻人酒). It writes 人 for 仁.
- The Bencao gangmu (Siku quanshu, juan 22) gives a shorter form of the same recipe under the name 大麻仁酒, citing the Qiezhong fang.
- Brand and Zhao (2017) date the Tujing bencao quotation to 1070, translate the indication and give their reading of the preparation.
Source conflicts
- The Zhenglei bencao has the powder pounded by two people in turn and the wine drunk "when it is neither too hot nor too cold"; the Bencao gangmu has "pounded ten thousand strokes" and "taken warm". The article follows both where they agree.
Is it cannabis?
- The drug is 大麻仁, the seed of 大麻, Cannabis sativa (Brand and Zhao).
Title
- Pinyin of 大麻仁酒. Redirects: Da ma ren jiu (Brand and Zhao) and the Chinese characters.
Kind and plant part
- Traditional medicine, a medicated wine. Seed.
- First recorded: 1070, the Tujing bencao quotation; the Qiezhong fang itself is earlier and undated in the sources cited.
- Still made: not known.
- Brand and Zhao's suggestion about resin glands and decarboxylation is given on the article as theirs, with their own judgement that it is speculative.
