Page scope
Cordillera Oriental (Colombia) is a Growing Region: a named region that sits above Growing Areas and below the regional complex and gene pool. It groups two growing areas on the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes: the Provincia de Ocaña, in Norte de Santander, and El Playón, in Santander. The growing areas of the plains and piedmont east of the range belong to Llanos Orientales; those of the Central Cordillera to Cordillera Central (Colombia); and those of the Caribbean north to Northern Colombia.

Discussion
Why the region is on the map
- No source read names the Eastern Cordillera as a growing region. The region groups two growing areas, each of which rests on its own sources; their pages give the evidence in full.
- The National Police report of January 1973 (Britto 2020, ch. 5) names "the border with Venezuela, in the Departments of Santander, Boyacá, and Arauca" as one of five regions of marijuana cultivation. It names no place, and does not name Norte de Santander; the page gives it at department scale.
- The Provincia de Ocaña was first placed in Northern Colombia, as part of the same northern belt of departments. No source read joins it to the Sierra Nevada or the Perijá as one growing zone, and all its evidence dates from 1998 on; it lies on the Eastern Cordillera next to El Playón, and was moved to this region in November 2026.
The name
The page takes the name of the range, Cordillera Oriental, with the country in brackets, as Cordillera Central (Colombia) does for the Central Cordillera.
Growing status
The status is Active. Both areas are Active on their own evidence: plantations reported in the Provincia de Ocaña in 2014–2016 and eradication there from 1998 to 2018, and eradication in El Playón from 2012 to 2018. No source says that growing has ended in either.
How the border is drawn
- The border is the two growing areas' own borders, joined, with no land added: the Provincia de Ocaña (its ten municipalities) and El Playón (the municipality). Where the region and an area share an edge, the line is the area's.
- El Playón borders Cáchira, in the Provincia de Ocaña, so the region is one shape of about 8,300 km², the figure in the infobox.
- The region is drawn on the documented tracts only. The rest of the range is outside it: the Ministry of Defence's eradication dataset lists only small or scattered marijuana totals there (for example 6 hectares in Durania, Norte de Santander, 2014–2015; 2.85 in Rionegro, Santander, 2013; 0.2 in Campohermoso, Boyacá, 2009).
- The infobox point (8.36, −73.22) is the centre of the shape, not a field.
- The border is not drawn from accession or news points.
Land left out
- Herbarium sheets from Tunja (1971), Zetaquira (2010), San Vicente de Chucurí (2024) and Pamplona (1973) lie on the range outside the border. None records a crop in a field: the Tunja sheet gives no data, the Zetaquira sheet only a vereda, the San Vicente de Chucurí sheet plants cultivated in gardens, and the Pamplona sheet is a university teaching sheet.
- Southern Cesar, next to the Provincia de Ocaña, has marijuana entries in the dataset (San Martín, Aguachica, González, Río de Oro) and is left out, as on the Provincia de Ocaña's page.
Sources
- All the sources on the page except the 1973 police report (Britto 2020) are cited on the pages of the two growing areas; the page repeats what they say, at their scale.
- Ministry of Defence, Erradicación (open dataset). The totals for the Provincia de Ocaña and El Playón are those given on their pages.
