Discussion

Inclusion

Kew's catalogue names the object Sandal cord of plaited hemp and files it under the plant name 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa. Catalogues use the word hemp for other fibres too; here the plant name identifies the plant as Cannabis. The cord is an object made from cannabis, and neither wording is hedged, so the attribution is Stated. The infobox quotes the object's name.

Evidentiary scope

The entry gives Yokohama as the place, an entry number of 1898 and a donor, and no maker, no date of making and no collector. It documents plaited hemp cord for sandals from Yokohama, at Kew by 1898; it does not say who made the cord or where its fibre was grown. It documents no plant, population or living holding, and landrace, feral and conservation fields do not apply to an artefact.

Editorial treatment

The entry book number is not the date of making. Kew's help page defines an Entry Book Number as a number assigned to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition. The date made is left empty. The date acquired is 1898, from the entry book number 24.1898.

Object type. The object is plaited cord, not rope, so the object type is Cord.

Sandal cord. The use is part of Kew's name for the object and is quoted as it stands. The catalogue does not say what kind of sandal the cord was for, and the page draws nothing further from it.

No culture is entered. Kew's catalogue has no culture field and names no people as makers or users.

Acquired from. The field gives T. L. Bullock, Kew's Bullock TL in initials form. The donor is not further identified. The field collector is empty, because Kew's collector fields are blank.

Image. Kew publishes two photographs of the cord through GBIF under CC BY 4.0: the cord alone, used here, and the cord with a colour chart and its typed label, which also reads Loc.: B1.
