Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant at Timpu at 8,000 feet in August 1914 and records nothing about its habitat. It names no use, variety or local name, and does not say whether the plant was growing wild, escaped or cultivated. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned. The accession is classified Other.
Label reading
Read from the Edinburgh image (E00150674, 2765 × 4096 pixels).
- Printed label FLORA OF BHUTAN., with printed field names (Locality, Date, Altitude, Remarks, No.) filled in by hand, and the printed foot R. E. Cooper, Collector for A. K. Bulley, Esq., Cheshire.
- Pencil 153 above the label: a filing figure, not a field datum.
- Pencil 153? above the label; a packet at the lower left carries the number 3352.
- Handwritten entries. Locality Timpu; Date 8/8/14; Altitude 8000'; Remarks No. 3352, Cannabis sativa L.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted because Timpu alone names a district or a valley, not a collection point. Elsewhere Cooper writes Timpu after a place-name (Chukka Timpu, Chalimarphé Timpu), as a district.
Editorial treatment
The collector field takes R.E. Cooper, the label's form, and the article uses the initials only. The catalogue gives the full name as Roland Edgar Cooper; the International Plant Names Index (author 1790-1) and the Harvard Index of Botanists give Rowland Edgar Cooper, 1890–1962. The province field takes the present-day dzongkhag in its English form, Thimphu District, because the label names Timpu. Timpu is read as the label's spelling of Thimphu, an identification made for this page. The locality field keeps the label's spelling.
