Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant about four feet tall in a swamp at Chukka, above 3,000 feet, in July 1914. It names no use, variety or local name, and does not say whether the plant was growing wild, escaped or cultivated. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned. The accession is classified Other: a swamp is not a ruderal habitat.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00150670, 2762 × 4096 pixels).

  • Printed label FLORA OF BHUTAN., with printed field names (Locality, Date, Altitude, Remarks, No.) filled in by hand, and the printed foot R. E. Cooper, Collector for A. K. Bulley, Esq., Cheshire.
  • Pencil 153 above the label: a filing figure, not a field datum.
  • Pencil = 153 and 5 above the label; a closed packet at the top of the sheet carries the number 1104.
  • Handwritten entries. Locality Chukka. Timpu.; Date 3/7/14; Altitude 3000'+; Remarks No. 1104, 4' growing in swamp, Cannabis sativa L.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. Chukka is read as Chukha, the name of a place on the Wang Chhu and of the present-day dzongkhag, and Timpu as the label's spelling of Thimphu; both readings are identifications made for this page. No settlement point for Chukha was found that the label's altitude could test: the Chukha point OpenStreetMap returns for a search is the centroid of the dzongkhag's boundary (relation 3899603), whose ground height happens to lie near the 4,500 feet of the next day's sheet. A boundary centroid is not a place, so it is not used.

Editorial treatment

The collector field takes R.E. Cooper, the label's form, and the article uses the initials only. The catalogue gives the full name as Roland Edgar Cooper; the International Plant Names Index (author 1790-1) and the Harvard Index of Botanists give Rowland Edgar Cooper, 1890–1962. The province field takes the present-day dzongkhag in its English form, Chukha District, because the label names Chukka. The locality field keeps the label's spelling. The elevation field is empty because 3000'+ is a lower limit.
