Evidentiary scope

The form gives the habitat culture in slope at a named village area near Liuzhou in September 1940: the plant was taken from a crop on a hillside. It names no use and no seed origin. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1940. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (IBK00130892, 1,080 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Collecting form (printed 中國科学院華南植物研究所廣西分所 / 採集記錄, typed, the place by hand): 採集人, a name stamped in pale blue / 採集号數 83105 / 採集日期 19[4]0年9月, the day blank, the third figure of the year overtyped / 產地 柳州沙塘江湾村一带 / 環境 culture in slope / 性狀 herbaceous / 樹皮 bark greenish with white se… (cut at the edge) / 葉 palmatisect stipules green … above pale green beneath / 花 axillary 5 sepaloid pale green 5 lobe in bracate stamen 5 / 果 filament free anther yellow / a struck word, then 2 cell longtheoide / 學名 Cannabis sativa L. / 科名 167 struck through and 170 in pencil.
  • Label (printed 中國科学院華南植物研究所 / 廣西分所, typed): 标本号 59299 / CANNALIS SATIVA L. / 採集人, the same stamp / 採集号 83105 / 鑑定人 (blank). Round stamp of the branch's herbarium with 59299; box stamp 廣西省 / KWANGSI; a tag tied to the stem, 83105. Barcode GUANGXI INSTITUTE OF BOTANY.

The readings agree on the number, the month, the place, the habitat and the notes. Both read the stamped name, faint, as 钟济新 (or 鍾濟新), every character uncertain, and both find the year's third figure overtyped: one reads it as 4, the other leaves it open.

Georeferencing

Jiangwan village (江湾村) is one of the administrative villages of Shatang town (沙塘镇), Liubei District, Liuzhou (Chinese Wikipedia). OpenStreetMap has no point for the village, and the form names the area around it (一带). The point 24.45, 109.37 is the middle of Shatang town's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 7579843, about 88 km²), which falls inside the town's boundary; Wikidata's point for the town (Q11139828) lies within half a kilometre of it. SRTM gives about 100 m there, and the form gives no altitude. It is an area point for the town, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 6 km.

Editorial treatment

Classification. Landrace follows from the form's culture in slope at a named village area in 1940. Guangxi University's College of Agriculture moved to Shatang in 1938 (Chinese Wikipedia). The form names the area around Jiangwan village, not the college or its grounds, and no source read places the village at an experiment station or an institution's fields.

Collector. The collector field takes the stamped name as both readings and the catalogue give it, 钟济新 (Chung Chi-hsin in the romanisation of the time; pinyin Zhong Jixin), and the title takes the surname as Chung. A lecture published by the Chinese Virtual Herbarium names 钟济新 as a professor of the Guangxi Forestry College in 1954, and the International Plant Names Index records a type gathered at Liuzhou on 21 August 1940 by C. H. Tsoong, no. 82998, held at Guilin. No source read gives the two forms of the name together, and the name is not linked.

Date. The form is printed for the Guangxi branch of the South China Institute of Botany, the name the Chinese Academy of Sciences gave in 1954 to Guangxi University's institute of economic botany (Chinese Wikipedia), so the form and label were copied at least fourteen years after the date they give. The year's third figure is overtyped; September 1940, with the catalogue's year, is stored.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
