Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The note gives the place, the date, an open meadow and the colours of the flowers. It names no use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (PEY0036149, 1,123 × 1,440 pixels; KUN 0169102, 959 × 1,440 pixels).
- PEY0036149, note (ink, by hand, no printed label): Cannabis sativa L. 大麻 / 簡 152A ♂ flowers / 三清閣左山 / open meadow / shrub / two characters, not read / K-green or tinged with purple / a-greenish yellow. Tag tied to the stem: 1941 / 9.18 / 152 / A. Pencil 2747 at the foot of the sheet. Barcode 北京大学生物标本馆 (PEY).
- KUN 0169102, slip (ink, on squared paper): 聯大 152B / R.N. 2747 / Sept. 18Th. 1941 / Cannabis. Tag tied to the stem: 1941 / 9.18 / 152 / B. Determination slip (typed): Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit, H.Chuang 72.9. Round stamp 中國科學院植物研究所 / 標本室 / 昆明工作站; KUN No. 0525289.
The readings agree on both sheets' numbers and dates, the place and the notes. On the note, one reads the first character as 簡 and the other leaves it open (簡, 筒 or 閒); a third look at the image reads 簡. One reads the sign before flowers as ♂ and the other leaves it unread; the plant's open male flowers bear out ♂. The line after shrub was read once as a height, 4 尺, uncertain, and not read in the other. On the Kunming sheet, one reading allows 8 for the letter B.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Chinese Wikipedia names the Sanqing Ge (三清阁) among the sights of the Western Hills (西山) forest park at Kunming, with the Longmen. Neither OpenStreetMap nor Wikidata gives the pavilion a point (Wikidata's item for the site, Q60993244, has no coordinate), and the note names the hill to its left, which no source places. The province field takes Yunnan.
Editorial treatment
Two sheets, one accession. The two sheets carry the same date, 18 September 1941, the same number, 152, as 152A on the male sheet and 152B on the female, and the same second number, 2747. The page takes them as one gathering, its male and female plants mounted apart. The repository and catalogue number are PEY0036149's, the sheet with the place. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Title and number. The title takes the surname on the male sheet's note, 簡 (Chien in the romanisation of the time; pinyin Jian), and the number on both tags, 152. The second number, written R.N. 2747 on the Kunming slip, is not explained on either sheet; the catalogue gives it as the Kunming sheet's number.
Collector. The collector field takes 簡 as the note writes it. The Kunming slip writes 聯大 in the same place: 西南聯大 is the short name of the National Southwestern Associated University, formed by Tsinghua, Peking and Nankai universities and at Kunming from 1938 to 1946 (Chinese Wikipedia), so the slip names the university, not a person. No source read names a collector 簡 at the university in 1941, and the name is not linked.
Province. Neither sheet names a province. The province field takes Yunnan, from the Sanqing Ge in the Western Hills at Kunming, where the university then stood; other places called 三清閣 lie outside Yunnan.
Determination. The identified-by field takes the Kunming slip's H. Chuang, dated 72.9, as typed.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the collector of PEY0036149 as 简, with no number, and of KUN 0169102 as 联大, with the number 2747; the tags give both sheets the number 152.
