Page scope
Boseong treats Boseong County, in the south-west of South Korea, as a cannabis growing area: the hemp grown there for sambe cloth, from the early records to the reports of the 2000s and 2010s. Korean hemp cloth in general is treated at Sambe, and the law on hemp in both Korean states at Korea. The county as a whole, and its tea, are separate subjects.

Discussion

Why Boseong is a growing area

  • Seoul Shinmun (4 July 2003): "그가 사는 보성 복내면에는 300여 농가가 대마밭 40㏊를 경작" (in Bokne-myeon, Boseong, about 300 farm households cultivate 40 hectares of hemp fields).
  • Go (2004), from a survey made in 2003: Boseong hemp cloth held 35 per cent of the country's production and 50 per cent of what was traded.
  • Doh and colleagues (2019): seed of a local cultivar collected at Boseong ("Boseung") in July 2008 and July 2009.
  • Choi (2014), citing a Japanese survey of about 1918 and a county history of 1995: Boseong among the main hemp-cloth districts of South Jeolla, and its hemp output falling from 1976.

How the border is drawn

  • The line follows Boseong County (OpenStreetMap relation 7689291). The sources name the county, and the fields of the 2003 reports lie in Bokne-myeon, inside it.
  • The county line in OpenStreetMap takes in part of the sea off the coast. Since October 2026 land that ESA WorldCover 2021 maps as open water, as bare or sparsely vegetated, or as snow and ice, and ground above 4,000 m, is left out at the outer edge of the border only; land of those kinds that the kept ground encloses is inside. The border is about 680 km², the figure in the infobox, down from about 790 km² inside the county line.
  • Land cover: ESA WorldCover 2021 (version 200, 10 m), © ESA WorldCover project 2021 / Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2021) processed by ESA WorldCover consortium, licensed CC BY 4.0.
  • The infobox point (34.80, 127.18) is the centre of the border, not a field.

Growing status

The status is Active: reports of 2003 describe hemp grown in Bokne-myeon, seed of the local cultivar was collected in 2008 and 2009, and a 2016 report names Boseong among the districts then growing hemp. No source says that growing has stopped. The newest figure for the county's hemp area is from 2003.

Sources

  • Go (2004). The romanisation of the author's name follows Choi (2014), who cites the paper.
  • Doh and colleagues (2019). The paper spells the place "Boseung" and places it in the "south western province".
  • Seoul Shinmun (2003). The national figure of about 300 hectares falling to 80 is the newspaper's, given without a year.

Open questions

  • How much hemp the county grows now. The reports after 2003 name Boseong among growing districts but give no area.
