Why the area is on the map

  • Artux police (阿图什警讯, 28 July 2022): 41 cannabis plants interplanted in a maize field at Suntagh (松他克) town, uprooted on 27 July 2022.
  • 九派新闻 (17 January 2024): a man in Artux grew cannabis at home from the end of June 2023 and smoked the leaves; 41 g found.

These are reports of cannabis grown in the named city and town. No older source read names Artux for cannabis, and none places cultivation in a particular part of the city beyond Suntagh.

Growing status

The status is Active: the police reports describe cannabis grown in Artux City in 2022 and 2023. No source read says that growing there has ended.

How the border is drawn

  • The border outlines the oasis on the plain of Artux City (OpenStreetMap relation 2710651), the county-level city the police reports name, round the city and Suntagh, north of Kashgar. It takes the land that the ESA WorldCover 2021 land-cover map classes as cropland or built-up. Gaps of up to about 6 km are closed so that fields, orchards, villages and towns join into one oasis, and holes inside it are filled. The result is one part of about 1,700 km², the figure in the infobox; the city as a whole is about 15,500 km², most of it mountain and gravel.
  • The city's other farmland lies in the foothills of the Tian Shan: the basin of Halajun (哈拉峻, about 850 km²) and nine smaller valleys. They are left out, because no case read places growing in them.
  • The border lies inside the Southern Xinjiang border and does not overlap the Kashgar or Akto borders.
  • The land-cover map shows where fields and settlements were in 2021. It is not evidence of where cannabis is or was grown; the places the sources name are given in the article.
  • The border is not drawn from accession or news points. Check points: Artux city and Suntagh inside; Kashgar city and Akto town outside.

The name

The page takes the modern form of the name, Artux. Artush and Atush, spellings found in English sources, redirect here. The Chinese name is Atushi (阿图什).

Sources

  • Artux police (2022): the WeChat article of 阿图什警讯, read in full; WeChat gives no stable link to it, so the citation names the account, title and date.
  • 九派新闻 (2024): read in full on 腾讯新闻.

Sources not used

  • A second Artux police article of September 2022 (13 plants grown at a home) could not be found again to check, and is not cited.
  • A video page of August 2026 headed "男子棉田私种10株大麻落网(阿图什公安)" (a man caught for growing 10 cannabis plants in a cotton field) carries only the headline; it is not cited.
