Why Arauca is a growing area
- Britto (2020, ch. 5) gives the National Police report "General Diagnostic of Public Order, 1967–1972", submitted to the president on 23 January 1973, which named five regions involved in marijuana cultivation, the last being "the border with Venezuela, in the Departments of Santander, Boyacá, and Arauca". The page cites the chapter: the edition read has no print page numbers.
- Cervantes Angulo (1980, pp. 250–251) reprints a text by Ernesto Samper Pizano, then president of ANIF, dated 15 March 1979: the Sierra Nevada still held at least 60 per cent of the area, but the area planted had shifted towards the Llanos Orientales, "especialmente Arauca y Vichada". The passage is Samper's, reprinted in the book, and the page attributes it to him.
- The Ministry of Defence's open dataset lists 12 entries of marijuana eradicated in the four municipalities between 20 October 2013 and 9 January 2017, 12.63 hectares in all (downloaded 3 November 2026).
- The status is Active, on the eradication entries of 2013–2017. No source says growing in the area has ended.
The name and the extent
- The 1973 and 1979 sources name the department, Arauca, and the area takes that name. The page for the department is Arauca Department.
- The area is drawn on the four municipalities with eradication entries, not on the whole department (about 23,800 km²), which would be the size of a growing region. The town of Arauca and the municipalities of Cravo Norte and Fortul have no marijuana entries and are outside it.
- The map border is the union of the four municipalities as drawn in OpenStreetMap (relations 11312106 Arauquita, 11311826 Puerto Rondón, 11311667 Saravena, 11311666 Tame), simplified; about 11,700 km², the figure in the infobox. It is one continuous shape.
- The point in the infobox is the centre of the border, not a field.
Sources
- Ministry of Defence, Erradicación (open dataset). Rows for Arauca with crop type marihuana: Arauquita 8.12 ha (7 rows, October 2013 to January 2017; the largest 3.2 ha), Puerto Rondón 2.5 (1 row, 26 September 2014), Tame 2.0 (3 rows, May 2014 to March 2015), Saravena 0.01 (1 row, 29 June 2015). Each row gives a date, a municipality and an area, and no vereda.
Not used
- Vichada, which the 1979 study names with Arauca, has marijuana entries in Cumaribo (5.3 hectares, 2010–2020) and La Primavera (1 hectare, 2014); it is outside this area.
