Evidentiary scope
The label records the plant as grown at Tokyo, 產地 東京 with cult. added in ink (locality Tokyo; cultivated), with the Japanese name アサ (asa). Its date line has the year 廿七年 (the 27th year) and no era name, so the gathering may date from 1894 (Meiji 27) or from 1952 (Shōwa 27), and the sheet is treated as undated. The label says nothing more about how or by whom the plant was grown, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from NSII's image of the sheet (680 × 1024 pixels).
- Label (printed form, ink entries). No. (blank); Moraceae. struck through, ink Cannabinaceae above it / 桑 科 / Cannabis sativa L. / ア サ / 產地 東京 with ink cult. / ink 廿七年, a month and a day, and no era name / 東京 三省堂器械標本部製作 with the firm's mark.
- Stamp (lower left, blue, round). 云南大学生物系 around a star; in the centre 植物 / 标本室; a stamped number below it.
- Barcode label (top right). 02032350.
- Readings that differ. The month was read as 九 (9) with doubt once, and as 九 or 二 once; the day as 二 (2) with doubt both times. Neither is stated. The stamped number was read 0061168 once and 0661168 once, and is not used. A pencilled note at the label's right, read 16, a mark and 170, is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label names Tokyo but gives no date that can be placed. Tokyo named a city of fifteen wards from 1889, a city of 35 wards from 1932, and from 1943 the metropolis that replaced the city. With no date the name is ambiguous between these three areas, and the one it meant cannot be fixed. The province field gives Tokyo, which holds every one of them.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The label is the printed form of Sanseidō's instrument and specimen department and names no collector. The firm made up and supplied the specimen; it is not taken as the collector, so the collector field is empty and the title takes the Anon. s.n. form.
Date. The year 廿七年 carries no era name. It is Meiji 27 (1894) or Shōwa 27 (1952): the Taishō era ended in its fifteenth year, and Heisei 27 (2015) is later than the catalogue entry, which NSII dates to 2014. Sanseidō's instrument and specimen department is dated by one source read, to the years 1911 to 1913, when the poet Ozaki Kihachi worked there (Japanese Wikipedia); that neither confirms nor rules out either reading. The date field is empty and the title takes s.d.
Title. Two undated sheets from Tokyo in the Yunnan University Herbarium would share the title Anon. s.n., Tokyo (s.d.), so each adds the holder's catalogue number. The other is Anon. s.n., Tokyo (s.d.), 2151C0001C02032370; nothing in either catalogue entry shows whether the two come from one gathering.
Taxon. The scientific name field gives the label's Cannabis sativa L.; the catalogue gives the genus only.
Local name. Asa, the label's katakana アサ, goes in the local name field.
Place. The province field takes Tokyo; the locality field gives the label's place in English, Tokyo, cultivated.
Image. The page carries no image. NSII publishes the scan with no licence of its own, and GBIF gives the occurrence CC BY-NC 4.0, which the wiki does not upload under; the label was read from NSII's image and the scan is cited.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue and GBIF file the sheet under the genus Cannabis; the label names Cannabis sativa L. The page follows the label.
- NSII gives the catalogue number as 02032350, as the barcode on the sheet reads, and GBIF as 2032350. The page follows the barcode.
- NSII and GBIF give the number 167. The label's number line is blank, and the pencilled note at its right was read as 16, a mark and 170; the page gives no number.
