Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label reads Miura, japan cultivated (Miura, Japan, cultivated) and Sept. 1891, and gives the plant's Japanese name: Asa jap. name (asa, the Japanese name). It names no collector and gives no use. Whether Miura names the place is not certain (see Georeferencing). Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1891. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3587 × 5132 pixels).
- Label (ink, on brown paper, under the stamp Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis). Cannabis sativa L. / Asa jap. name / Miura, japan cultivated / Sept. 1891. Printed ticket: 435.
- Readings that differ. The year was read 1891 twice, with 1894 allowed once; the catalogue's year is 1891.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on many sheets of this herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label's Miura stands before japan, in the place of a locality, but it can be read as one of three places or as a person: the Miura District of Kanagawa, which in 1891 covered the whole Miura peninsula; the peninsula itself; the city of Miura, created only in 1955; or a Japanese surname. As a place the word resolves to more than one area, it may be a person's name, and nothing on the sheet or in the catalogue separates these readings.
Editorial treatment
Title. The ticket 435. is a printed number of the herbarium's, not a collector's number, so the title takes the s.n. form, with the label's word Miura as its place.
Place. The locality field keeps the label's Miura. The province field is empty: every place reading of Miura lies in Kanagawa, but the word may be a person's name.
Local name. Asa, the label's jap. name, goes in the local name field.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives no place; the label's Miura and cultivated are from the sheet. The holder's own page gives the collector as anonymous.
