Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant in the environs of Guryev in 1895. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3521 × 5123 pixels).
- Label. Stamp Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis. / by hand 1895. Уральск. обл., окр. г. Гурьева. / at the lower right Завед. Гурьевск. мореходн. класс. (заведующий Гурьевскими мореходными классами).
- Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
- The stamped number 64790 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
- A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.
Georeferencing
The point 47.11, 51.91 is the city of Atyrau, OpenStreetMap relation 9347854 (place=city), in Atyrau Region. The English Wikipedia's page on the city gives it as known until 1991 as Guryev. The label says the environs of the town, not a spot within them. SRTM gives -21 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The label names the collector by post only, as head of the Guryev navigation classes. The collector field is left empty, and the title uses Anon. as for other sheets that name no collector.
Taxon. The label names no plant; the infobox takes Small's 1975 determination, the only one on the sheet, and names him as the determiner.
Place. Guryev is Atyrau; the province field takes Atyrau Region. The label's Ural Oblast is the oblast of the Russian Empire, in whose Guryev uezd the town lay.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives no collector or locality; the label names the environs of Guryev and signs by post.
