Discussion
Evidentiary scope
One label places the plant at the edge of a path (Bord d'un chemin); the other two give no habitat. None names a use or a crop. A pathside is outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of each sheet (NAS00103712, 1,000 × 1,586 pixels; NAS00103713, 1,000 × 1,604 pixels; NAS00103720, 1,000 × 1,594 pixels).
- NAS00103712 (printed MUSÉE HEUDE, by hand): Famille Cannabinacées / Genre Cannabis / Espèce sativa L. / Localité Hai-tchen / Date 30 Août 1931 / Observations Bord d'un chemin. / N° 2808. JIANGSU province stamp (江蘇省); stamp of the Nanjing Botanical Garden, Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院植物研究所南京中山植物園); red 089232.
- NAS00103713 and NAS00103720: the same label in the same hand, with Observations blank; the same stamps; red 089250 and 089251.
The two readings agree. Both mark the last letters of the locality uncertain: the word is cursive and could end tchen or tcheu, and one reading also allows tcheou.
Georeferencing
No point is given. Hai-tchen is written in a French romanisation, its last letters cursive. It was searched in Wikidata and in English and French Wikipedia as Hai-tchen, Haitchen and Hai-tcheng, and as 海城 and 海澄. The places found, Haicheng in Liaoning (Wikidata Q1011073) and the former Haicheng County in Fujian (Wikidata Q11151098), do not match the label's spelling, and nothing on the sheets favours either. The labels name no province, and the province field is left empty.
Editorial treatment
Title. No collector is named, so the title takes Anon. and the labels' number.
Collector. The catalogue's A. J. M. Delavay cannot be the collector: Pierre Jean Marie Delavay died on 31 December 1895 (Harvard botanist index; English Wikipedia), 36 years before the date on the labels, and his name appears on none of the sheets. The collector field is left empty.
Three sheets, one accession. The sheets share the number, the place and the date, in the same hand. The repository and catalogue number are NAS00103712's, the sheet with the habitat.
Province. Each sheet carries the Nanjing herbarium's JIANGSU stamp, and the catalogue gives Jiangsu, but the labels name no province, so the province field is left empty.
Classification. Feral rests on one label's Bord d'un chemin; the other two labels say nothing to the contrary.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue gives the collector as A. J. M. Delavay, who died in 1895; the labels name no collector.
- The catalogue gives Jiangsu; the labels name no province.
