Why the area is on the map
- Akto County narcotics control office (April 2024): offenders in Akto have interplanted cannabis among field crops year after year.
- Akto County police (阿克陶县公安, 3 January 2024): a man grew cannabis in his own courtyard; 627 g found in his cattle pen.
- Kizilsu police (克州网警, 25 July 2024): three cannabis plants in maize fields reported to the Yumai police station.
- A repost of a Xinjiang Legal News item (Bilibili, 10 September 2024): 11 plants grown at a home, uprooted.
- Zhang and He (1992): cannabis from Akto among the nine places of production in southern Xinjiang that they analysed.
The reports name the county and, once, the Yumai police station. None names a village or says whether the plants were on the plain or in the mountain valleys.
Growing status
The status is Active: the police reports describe cannabis grown in Akto County in 2023 and 2024, and the county narcotics office describes interplanting as a recurring practice. No source read says that growing there has ended.
How the border is drawn
- The border outlines the oasis strip of Akto County (OpenStreetMap relation 2710678), the county the sources name, round Akto town and Yumai on the western edge of the Tarim Basin, beside the Kashgar area. It takes the land that the ESA WorldCover 2021 land-cover map classes as cropland or built-up. Gaps of up to about 6 km are closed so that fields, orchards, villages and towns join into one oasis, and holes inside it are filled. The result is one part of about 740 km², the figure in the infobox; the county as a whole is about 24,000 km², most of it the high Pamirs.
- The county's other farmland is left out: Oytagh (奥依塔克, about 150 km²), about 30 km to the west, and seven farmed valleys of the eastern Pamirs in the townships of Kizil-tau (克孜勒陶), Charlung (恰尔隆) and Tar (塔尔). No case read places growing in them.
- The border lies inside the Southern Xinjiang border and does not overlap the Kashgar, Yarkand or Artux borders.
- The land-cover map shows where fields and settlements were in 2021. It is not evidence of where cannabis is or was grown; the places the sources name are given in the article.
- The border is not drawn from accession or news points. Check points: Akto town and Yumai inside; Kashgar city, Shufu, Yengisar and Artux outside.
