Pelliot 440 is a herbarium accession of cultivated Cannabis sativa collected at Si-Ning-Fou (Xining), at 2,400 m, on 13 July 1908, on the Central Asian mission of Paul Pelliot and Louis Vaillant. Xining is today the capital of Qinghai, China. The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris holds the sheet as P06884311.[1]
Collection and locality
The field label is a printed form of the Muséum d'histoire naturelle for Pelliot & Louis Vaillant (Asie centrale). It is completed with N° 440, Date 13 Juillet 08 and, on the locality line, Chanvre cultivé (cultivated hemp). The museum label reads 940, 13 juil 08, Si-Ning-Fou (2400), Asie centrale, Mission Pelliot-Vaillant (1906–8) and Reçu en fév. 1909; its number differs from the field label's in the first figure.[2] The catalogue gives the number as 940.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries two plants with their roots and palmate leaves, one with a flowering top.[2] The label and the catalogue name the plant Cannabis sativa L.[2][1] The mission's sheet from Kashgar, of October 1906, is Pelliot 121 (1906).
