Damascus General Population 1915 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Damascus on 16 April 1915 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 40608.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
The department's printed inventory gives the seed as coming from Damascus, presented by W. Stanley Hollis, the American consul general at Beirut, who had it from the consular agent at Damascus, Young. It prints Young's note, which calls the seed "Turkish hemp" and advises sowing it in well-irrigated or nearly marshy, rich ground at the season of quickest growth, since "the higher the shoots can be grown, the longer and better the fiber".[2]
