Yihsien General Population 1917 is a historical seed accession of Cannabis sativa that the United States Department of Agriculture received from Yihsien, in Shandong, China, on 1 June 1917 and numbered plant introduction (PI) 44804.[1] No seed of the lot survives. The National Plant Germplasm System, whose database carries the department's introductions, says the accession "no longer exists and can not be requested".[1]
The lot
The department's printed inventory lists the lot as hemp from Yihsien, Shantung, presented by the Rev. R. G. Coonradt and received on 1 June 1917, for the department's Office of Fiber Investigations. Coonradt's note: "The hemp is planted here in March, in rich, black soil, and often irrigated. From the fiber taken from the outside of the stalk our best rope is made."[2]
